Thi democrats don't like the news from Maine, and they will like the news from the country in November till less. : The McKinley law has been repeal d, but its author still draws 'larger crowds than any other political orator in the country, v The total vote of Vermont is 2000 larger than the presidential vote of 1892. Republican stay-at-homes are scarce this year. : Joins and Stewart simply illustrate what happens to two senators who represent a vast area of sagebrush, with ho constituency to speak of. . Thosx 79 votes which the republi cans will need to give them control of the next House are sure to be had. But every republican mast go to the polls. ..', . istance, the same system of commerce the same appliances of prosperity. But the apprehension of a radical as sault upon the protection policy served to depress every" kind of busi ness and to bring on a panic. The stagnation of trade and production affected the government the same as it affected the people. As a conse quence, the receipts for the fiscal year 1894 were nearly $89,000,000 less than for the fiscal year 1893, and the public debt bad to be increased f 50,000,000 to save the treasury from impending bankruptcy. These figures are plain, conclusive, and easy to understand. They demonstrate at a glance the dif ference in the two parties in the mat ter of managing the affairs of the government and taking care of the interests of the country. Their differ ences cannot be concealed or evaded.; and it is sufficient in itself to satisfy all intelligent and patriotic citizens that democratic rule is a mockery and a calamity. Orbook is standing the hard times better than auy state in the Union. Crops are . good, though mouey is scaroe. We are not competed to pile up tbe wood aud store the poal tor a long siege of winter, and slock can mostly lake care of itself, as grass grows just as soon as the tall rains set in and usually keeps growing while our eastern brethren are housed , up by bliuards which blind them between the house and barn. We have never beeu hilariously prosperous and the panic thus found us fortified in more way than one. Thrice blest is he whose home is in Oregon, though he may not realise it himself. The republican senatorial conven tion of Cowlitz, Pecifio and Wahkia kum counties in Washington, did a wise act placing in nomination Hon. J. G. Megler, of Brookileld. Mr. Meg. ler is well qualified for the position, having already served two terms in the legislature of tbe state. The wri ter waa for years in the employ of Mr. Megler aui always found him upright and honorable in bis dealings ' and possessed of good business judgment. He is just the kind of a man to be of service in tbe legislature. Jury litst. That the loss of life and property by forest fires is largely unnecessary ia proved by the comparative iaMounity from sfesm in Canada and Maine, where the laws are stringent and the man who starts a forest fire is treated as a pub lie enemy. .Canada maintains a fire patrol and fire wardens who are au thorised to call for assistance.
