Superintendent Ackerroan's method of handling Institute work is well known to sll educator of tbe state and are held In high estimation, Tbe inatruction in Reading, Numbers, Language, History, Geography and school methods wers pevially valuable to young teachers, and wer highly appreciated by teacher! of experience. Tbe Interest of the teachrs Inthtwork was quite encouraging, and the fact was plainly developed that tb teachers, who sxpect to keep in tbe front rsnk of the pro ceealon, moat attend Institute work. Farnt Boas. I W. B. Dauoktt. V Com. A. J. 8h Sanaa. ) AN INSTITUTR LRTTRR. Thataachara' annual Institute recently held at Balnier, deserve more than a pass- Ins notice. While tbe attendance was not as large as In more thickly settled counties, the attention and appreciation was, ws be lieve, equal to the be it of tbem. Prof. Ackerman. than whom a better in- Imtltute conductor is seldom found, took hold of tbs work as th iugh something was to bs dona, and tbe magnetic, almost hyp notic influence which he immediately brought to bear upon bis hearers, com manded tbe closest attention. So deeply absorbed became both teacher and pat rons that tbev hardlv heeded the lapse of time as be unfolded, in brief outline, a mathod of preaentlns each ot the various branches taught in our common schools. In fact, he baa perfected and bad pub lished In pamphlet form, an outline of hi method as a unreative help to tb teach ers of Multnomah oounty, and it could be followed to exoell ant advantage by teachers of this oounty. To ons whose school days occurred forty years ago, the marked prog- . If not striking con trait in eduoauonal method and results is easily een. While progress Is ths watchword in every line of hminnaa snd In every avocstlon.yet iu none is It more evident than in this, which Is said to be the noblest of arts, but the sor rieat of trades. And yet, whsn by dint of nmnnnnn. one learns bis subject aa wall as Prof. Ackerman has, hs or she can not only command a good salary, but earn all they get. Tbe thoughts suggested in this brief insti tute will instill in tbe minds of teachers a feeling ot perseverance and encouragement which they would gain nowhere else, and the gathering together of co-laborers forms a mutual bond which ha lasting triendahlp. More than this; the hospitality of tbe Rain ier ladles wss more than repaid by the ap preciative manner In which it was received, . ,.u ,U - Yl .1 1 and every ooay agrees whu ii t..hr who aald "she would cherish the re membrance ot this institute as one of the nn anota of her memory."
