Oltc.Ov?0on;:Sjttt0t DnifcdStatei Connty Official Paper. tltlDAY, Jffltt, 1894. THE LUMBER INDUSTRY. Tba mill men of the Pacifits North west ara not worrying very much About the future of the lumber judui try, ays the Lumberman. It it the present (hat they are losing sleep over. In thit they are not alone. In com mon irUb every industry the lumber trade is in bail shape, and the depres- ion ta not oonunea to tne racinc ootul ; it ie everywhere. From the At lantic! to (he PaciSo and from Manitoba to Texas come reports of alow demand low prices, and poor collections. This Is due entirely to the financial depres sion. The retail lumber dealer are only buying for actunl consumption and not for stocking up purposes, and to long aa the period of unrest pre vails, just so long must the movement ot lnmber be restricted to actual re quirement. Wheu storking up com mences the future will take eaie of itself. What a demand for lumber and shingles must oome when business revives! Neatly every lumber yard 1 itt the country looks as if a cyclone had passed through, and it will be' to most of the yard men, like starling business over again. Stocks have been badly reduced since the financial flurry struck the country; in fact none have been buying the past year to stock up. The orders that have been placed with the mills and dealer the past ten mouths went for the bar est necessities, such as repairs, etc. The farmers, mechanics and capitalists have postponed building until brighter days. When,' therefore, business re vives, what an immense amount of building there will be. The same is true of demand in foreign lands. Australia, for instance, must begin to build soon ; so must South America, where the wars and rebellions of the the past five years have retarded prog ress. And Mexico and Europe ueed buildings. All this activity will come when the sun shines again, aud then the saw mills will be busy places. ' And the Pacific Northwest will prosper as it never prospered before. With a heavy influx of settlers into our smiling val leys and prairies, consuming aa im menee amount of lumber, the foreign demand taxing the capacity of the cargo mills ; the new markets opened In the east and a good local trade, this section will be a bee bive of industry. TUB PULLMAN BOYCOTT, TnHM Tt4 Up All Over the Vntie4 Statea. fher boycott against1 the Pullman campnfrv, which began some days ago, by the American Kail way Union, con tinues to become more serious. Al most every railroad in the United Stales la lHiiutuiiiet afq scarcely a train ia moving. This has been the case for several days. In San Fran :isc, Chicago, Ht, Louis, New York and in fact all the great railroad cett- trs, traffic is paradiscd. Even in Port land business on alt roads is practical ly suspended, aud United States mails are not moving. The boycolters de clare they will not handle railroad ears and malls so loog as Pullman cars are bandied. The boycott is not against (he railroad companies but against the Pullman company, and hence both suffer in consequence. In all the larger cities the United States mar shals have been unable to protect the mail trains, and the government regu lara have beeu prepared for action to save and protect the mails and property. In every state exoeot Oregon the militia has been brought into action. General Nelson A. Miles has been put in command of the regular army, and a decisive step is liable to result at a moment's notice. The greatest suf fers in this movement against the rail road companies are the farmers. Large shipments of farm produce and other perishable freight nave been almost entirely lost in transit. Live stock has also been damaged and delayed, so that the farmer and shipper suffer most. The fruit crop in California wi.I be almost a total luse on account of delay in shipping. The scene in Sacramento Wednesday was that of undisturbed riot. The state militia was called into action to quell the dis turbance at the depot but when the irders were given they refused to obey them and were finally marched back to the barracks. The decisive point will surely be reached in a day or two. FARM AND GARDEN. . Peas and Rye tn Orchards. The pea crop is best of sll for the orch ard. It keeps the ground shaded during the heats of the summer, and by keeping the snrface loose ft prevents evaporation, nnrt thns conserves moisture. If the peas are fed down by hogs left free ta root iu the soil they will thoroughly tree the land from the white grab, and eat the (alien fru't and S the warm which has caused it to drop has escaped. Hogs (bus kept make thrifty growth and better pork than can be made by starving them early and then a few weeks before killing them Blling their stomachs with corn, the hard est of all grains to digest, because it Is so largely carbonaceous in its composition. After the pea vines have beeu stripped of their peas the orchard should be plowed and sowed with rye to protect the surface daring the winter. Each year the rotation of rye and peas ia repeated the richer the kiS will become and the more thrifty the orchard. After two attempts to convict the men charged with conspiracy to smug gle Chinese into the United States, who were tried in Portland last week tne second jury failed to agree, nine being for acquittal and three for con viction. Thi Mist contended from the beginning that there was not suffi cient evidence to convict in this case, and now it has been proven by three to one. The jury were) nearly all farmers, summoned from the remotest section of the state, and bad no. pre judice in the matter. - Another at tempt would no doubt prove as futile as the last one. While new lawa nie in contempla tion aud changes being made in those now ia existence, why not amend the lav for the collection of taxes, and in stead, of the sheriff collecting and turning the same over to the treasurer, have the tax paid direct to the treas urer in the first place. This would tend to simplify matters and do away with considerable book-keeping, besides avoid the possibility of mistakes by the money passing through so many bands, and would be the mean of putting an end to so much confusion in more ways than one. . The Of Year with Applea. A writer in an exchange thinks that high culture and pruning will cause apple trees to bear full crops every year. But if he had ever noted attentively the apple trees in well-manured and cultivated gardens. says T. H. Hoskins ra Vermont Watch man," be would not have been so absolute in his statement. The truth is that it is very hard for a variety which is naturally an annual bearer to give a good crop of fruit on the off year. The insect enemies of the fruit are concentrated on the few bearing trees and either cause their fruit to drop, or disfigure it so that little of it is perfect, or would be salable, were it not for the scarcity of better. - Picking Strawberries. Mr. T. N. Baker, the strawberry grower, of Bridgeton. N. J., says of harvesting the crop: "I prefer never to pick until the fruit has dried off fro n the dew. In rainy weather we do the best we can , but delay the packing crates as long as possible. All strawberries should be picked with a short stem, by taking the stem between the front finger and thumb, bring the ncil of the thumb down on the stem, when with a slight bend of the stem the berry drops in the hand without injury, unless several are crowded in the hand before emptying, which should not be allowed.' We do not sort our berries for market; we classify them." TRKJlSVlfKR'" NOf ICR. ' Courrr Tmasumk's Office, ; St. Helens, Or., June 2, 1894.
