RECOMPENSE.
BY It. C MVXKimOCX.
Tt about a ww-k before Chriattnaa
herj Colonel Smith vu wandering
homeward npon ibe main thoroughfare
of the city of hi adoption. The colonel
m as foil of the spirit of the merry aea
aon aa was tlie very air itself. He tboogbt
of tbe prtaent be was abcrot to maka
and of those which be expected to receive
a be cat hi eye abont him and aw

elties in toy.
When he waa lost in inch a pleasant
Cbriatmaa reverie a he hr.'ln't bad since
be was a small boy, be happ-ned to pass
aloTiK in front of s grt marble boteL.
At tbe time he was passing a painter
waa engaged in the act of retosing some
of the inside blinds at an open window.
It is not likely that it will ever be known
Jnst bow it happened, bat tbe painter,
while probably preoccupied withdroa
of tbe approaching holiday, toppled the
pot of paint off the window sill, from
which point it whirled through tbe chilly
ashen air and deposited about three
quarter of its contents npon the colo
nel. The latter waa aa red with rage as be
waa with paint when be Sew into and
tbrcragb the main entrance of that hotel
Uid presented himself at tbe office.
"Sirr exclaimed the colonel in a tow
ertDgrae. "What kind of treatment do
jon call this, air?
"Pretty rough," replied the clerk, not
knowing exactly what to say, because be
waa ignorant of the accident that bad
just happened.
"I ara glad," roared the colonel, with
beautifnl irony, "that you are at least
kind enough to assume an attitude of
sympathy, but I am here, sir, to demand
satisfaction for damages. As I was pass
ing, sir, one of your painters, sir, upset
a pot of red paint upon me, sir!"
Here the colonel paused for breath,
and the clerk, learning tbe cause of his
trouble, became very profuse in his
apologies.
"I am sorry it happened, air, very
sorry. Cut you should not be so unrea-

amiable as to blame tbe establishment for
what was the fanlt of a painter em
ployed by it."
"You should employ only painters who
understand their bumnewt, sirr roared
tbe colonel in a fine frenzy, "and I will
teach you that paint cannot be poured
upon me with impunity, air!"
"We are willing," said the clerk, "to
do what is right in the matter. We will
pay for having your clothing cleaned, or
we will buy you a new suit if necessary."
"You cannot get out of it on any such
basis as that, sir. I am going to make
'an example of yon, sir, and inside of 24
boars, too, sir!" And having made this
threat the colonel bustled out of tbe
building and up tbe street
Upon the following day tbe colonel
sent his legal representative to talk the
matter over mid see if it could not be ad
justed to bis satisfaction without the
worry and expense of a legal contest.
It happened thut the hotel's attorney
waa present when the colonel's legal
friend arrived, and the former said:
"Wo are perfectly willing to do the
fair tliiny: by Colonel Smith. We admit
thut the colonel's clothing was ruined
through the negligence of one of our em
ployees, and we are willing to pay for it.
We will give him a sufficient sum to
tmrchitHc himself a new suit of clothes.
How does lJ0 strike you?"
"Such a proosilion would not strike
the colonel at all," replied the friend of
the ex-warrior, "It is not tbe amount
of money involved in this thing that is
making him miserably"
"Then what is it?" asked the hotel's at
torney. "It's bis feelings," replied the other
lawyer; "his feelings. You know he be
longs to one of the oldest und proudest
of all the old Virginia families, and he
Is as haughty and hypersensitive as any

ings have been douply wounded, and
they can never be hetilcd by the price of
a suit of clothes,"
"It in pretty Imrd to auk us to pay for
bla feelings," fluid the hotel's attorney,
with a sin il, "Iwcanse I do not see bow
we can appraise tin in in order to reach
an intelligent idol of their monetary
value."
"And then," broke in I lie other lawyer,
"be is living with a umidi-n aunt who if

person. And when she saw the colonel
enter the house balanbed with red paint
and beard that be had been gibed at by
boy a he passed along tbe street she
was completely sndone and baa since
been confined to ber bed. Her feelings
have got to be paid for too. The colonel
is really more distrained over hi aunt
feelings than anything else connected
with this unfortunate affair, and he pro
pose to fight it out on tbe baiia of their
feelings and wounded pride.
"See here," said the hotel's attorney.
"111 tell you what well do. Well settle
the thing for X3", and not a cent more.
If this doesn't meet your view of a fair
compromise, you must seek yonr remedy
in the law, and then yoa will find what
your client's feeling are worth.
"Ia that the beat you will do?"
"It is," replied the hotel' attorney.
On Christmas morning, when tbe bells
were ringing merrily in the frosty air,
Colonel Smith appeared in a new suit of
clothe to celebrate the occasion, for he
bad accepted tbe hotel's terms of $33.75
$."50 for bis ruined clothing and $3.73
for hi feelings and those of his dear old
aunty.
TO CHRISTMAS GIVERS.
ucceetlons as to Appropriate Holiday
1'rtMBU.
Tbe gift which harmonize with its fu
ture surroundings and just fits in a va
cant spot is tbe one which is most vai
ued. Tbe same rule applies to articles
of drees. To the young brunette, whose
evening gowns are generally pink or
crimson, the pale blue fan, altbongh
lovely in itself, would not be as service
able aa a plainer one which she could use
with her existing wardrobe. Before you
embroider the doiliea or centerpieces for
the housewife' table consider the color
of her cbina and try to bring your work
into affinity with her possessions.
Tbe friends in mourning and tbe in
valid appreciate the thoughtf ulness which
adapts the gift to their saddened lives.
The book, with its comforting message
the potted palm to brighten the darkened
room, the soft knitted shawl or slippers
in fact, anything tbatevidences consid
eration for their feelings, and does not
jar by incongruity, is priceless.
It is astonishing to note how much is
frittered away on perishable trifles when
the Christmas gift, of all others, should
be something enduring. The elaborate
card and berihboned booklet are prac
tically useless, atdde from tbe remem
brance which prompts their giving. Al
most every one has a collection of satin
band painted vanities, lovely to look at,
but the care of which is the despair of
both mistress and maid. But some say:
"Other things are beyond my means. I
cannot afford to give substantial pres
ents." It is a fact that tbe shops, espe
cially during the hot months, are filled
with at least three articles which delight
tbe hearts of homemakers the world
over, and which many young girls love
to collect against the wedding day.
What are tney, pray? Dainty individual
coffee cups, harlequin spoons and single
plates, suitable for the serving of fruits,
cream or salad.
Co-operation is a boon to the average
purse. If the members of the family or
a set of friends accustomed to exchange
gifts unite their finances, they can give
one handsome article in the place of sev
eral makeshifts. '
Good taste discriminates between tbe
needs of country and town and does not
end an opera glass or party bag to the
farmhouse. Neither does it give the boy
a book which be ought to like, but tries
to select one to complete his favorite se
ries. Children's stockings are sometimes
filled from the standpoint of maturity.
Utility and not suitability governs the
choice of their contents. There has been
many a disappointed, sorrowful heart on
Christmas morning because the powers
that be, forgetting their own childhood,
had catered to tbe tastes of those of 40
instead of to those of 4.
On the principle of like attracting like,
the most valuable gift too often finds its
way to the one who needs it least. In
some cases good judgment dictate the
giving of money as the kindest thing to
be done. How often gome poverty
straitened one has sighed over the ex
pensive gift, "If I only had the money
this gift cost!" No field affords a wider
opportunity for the exercise of common
sense than Christmas giving. Women,
by exercising judgment, not only benefit
themselves, but are a positive blessing
in their example to the entire sex, and
yuletiue of lts93 will be a happy one in
deed if common sense is more employed
in Christmas gifts. A. L. Fleming.

A Clever Dwarft
A magnificent feast hod been prepared
at HnrW iich in honor of tbe king and queen.
and it was arranged that the little dwarf.
Jeffrey, should ttep from a huge venison
pastry into ber tnajeaty aervica. This
mode of appearance was not new even then.
A pie with a dwarf inside was thought a
"dainty dish to set before a king." and a
gilt of this kind waa often a road to tbe
overturn favor.
On the day of the dinner Jeffrey found
binuelf imprisoned in a Urge dish, sur
rounded by a bigb wall of standing cruse
Of coarse a way had been found to give
faint air, but be afterward said he felt
buried alive. To add to his discomfort
Buckingham slyly ordered the pie to be
warmed, saying. It were better eaten
warm than cold."
Young Jeffrey remained quiet and aaid
never a word as tbe dish was carried to the
kitchen; but he was far from happy and
thonght of Nebuchadnezzar and the fiery
furnace until he grew "warm with appre
hension." The cook, however, understood
tbe joke and the dwarf pie waa placed in
safety oo tbe royal table. At last came
tbe fateful time the crowning moment of
Jeffrey s life.
The pie was opened, the trumpet sound
ed and forth sprang the dwarf. lie waa
clad In a full suit of armor and skipped
about the table shaking his little sword at
some of the gneatts; and, remembering the
scorching tbe duke had threatened for
him, he gave a vicious little tweak at his
grace's noble nose. Buckingham dtew
Uwk in titce to save his handsome face
and threatened to cudgel the young knave
with a chicken bone; but the king laughed
and said Buckingham waa served quite
right
By this time Jeffrey waa nearly deafened
with applause and half drowned in tbe
perfumes the buliea sprinkled upon him, so
he hastened to end the ccene by prostrating
himself before the queen plate and en
treating to be taken into her service. St.

What General Uim Did for Texas.
One episode in tbe career of the late
General W alter P. Lane will forever en
dear his memory In tbe hearts of the Texas
people. During the Mexican war, while
he was major of Hayes' regiment of Texas
Kangers, under t'eneral Wool, be was sent
with a small body of men in tbe direction
of San Luis PoUxi to discover the move
ments of the Mexican army. There were
two roads to nan Luis Potoni, one by
Matchuela, a large town, the otber by the
ereat hacienda of balado. where the seven
teen Texas war prisoners drew black beans
in IftW and were shot. The two roads were
divided by a range of mountains. Lane
look the left hand, and actually penetrated
to and entered tbe city of Matcbuela with
its 20,000 people and a garrixon of several
hundred men. He ordered and obtained
dinner at a meson, a sort of wagon )ard
inn, announced that a large American
army was near and feasted his men to
tbeir full.
Then remounting he retired obliquely
acroHs the mountain to the other road and
struck the hacienda of Salailo. Seizing
the alcalde be ordered tbe resurrection of
tbe bones of the seventeen martyred Tex
an and demanded mules, sacks and every
thing necessary to bear them away. All
were furnished and tbe remains of tbe
dead duly placed in transit on mules.
Lane bore the relics to General Taylor,
who had them escorted to La Grange, on
the Colorado, where they were interred
with great solemnity in the presence of
thousands. Thus to General I-ane Texas
is indebted for the posxeKHion of thexe me
mentos of a remarkable heroism. St.

The Value of Bight.
The value of tbe sight Is never fully ap
preciated until it is lost or impaired. Few
persons realize that the eye is an Intricate
piece of mechanism, with a vastly more
complex and delicate adjustment than the
costliest watch. Even in our public
schools tne children and youth are allowed
to abuse It in a moKt perilous way, the
tcacner seeming to be perfectly ignorant
of probable disastrous results. -

The present forward weather seem
to be great season for the small boy.
De gets more solid enjoyment out of the
warm day and the dry sidewalk than
tbe street donning department of the
ooard of pti4ic wwrk. Every small boy
who is anybody down on the heights baa
a pair of roller skate and a good strong
pair of lungs. These boy play hockey

not appear. It I perhaps because a
small boy cannot do much of anything
without yelling. These boy go scurry

One of the principal argument ad
vanced in favor of deer forest is that
those who are able to indulge In that
luxury spend much money in the High
lands. But how if sportsmen insist on
maintaining forest grounds and never
visit them? Mr. mans, whose sport
ing territory extends from the Beauly
Firtb to the Atlantic from sea to sea.
in fact has not shot over the land once
during the past four years, and aa the
deer have in consequence ninltipued
enormously, tbe crofters of the district
have resolved to ask the millionaire to
allow them a day's shooting.
The application is doubtless made
more with the view of bringing tbe
crofters' grievances before tbe public
than anything else, for it is sure to be
ignored. But tbe continued absence of
Mr. Winana raises a wider and more
important question: Can tbe setting
aide of a great stretch of country aa
deer forests which are never shot over
bo justified on any ground whatever?-
