Ore.-oti. DAVlt BRO'S., t t i : r.ilitors. St. Helens, October O, 181K1 wk ilom in tlio county olork's report BUggogts tho need i f retrenchment in 'tho matter of supporting the county 'poor. The item referred to is one of $909 82 for supplies furnished im!U gent '-pcraous during the past fix .month, and wliioh in round numbers would aggregate $2,000 per annum. Ai there is no prospect Unit the an nual expense to tho county f.r this particular item will ever be ncy loss than it is at present, it hns been tuig that there might bo wisdom ns well :is .an jtnnnal savine to the county in el--leoting a poor farm where these persons could be brought ioi'ethcr and made in a measure, self-supporting. It is .simply a question of a short time when the county will be obliged to take caro of its poor in this manner. And tho $2,00!) which it will pay for this item in the next twelve months will go far toward establishing such an institution on a sound financial basis. As at present conducted, all moneys expended in this way is a clear loss to the county, whereas, if it were invested in a permanent home for the poor, they con'.d be made largely self-sustaining. End in the meantime the county realize a valua ble return for its outlay in the shape - n r i : t i... l.. I . AH a wen luiprovtu juecv oi it-uiiy, ui- sides having a regular and romfirtaUe abode for the needy and an inexpensive place at which to care for them. There are other poteut arguments in favor of a county poor farm. Very many persons who are lo some extent de serving of assistance do not hesitate to ruu a grocery bill at the cipeuse of Jbe county, but who have a wholesale distaste for a public charity institution pnd lather than go to a poor faun, whatever self respect they may have would prompt them lo make an effort Jo support themselves, which tin y are much less opt to do if they can ask assistance at the hands of the county and bo accommodated at the nearest merchandise house. Without further enlarging upon this subject we are free to maintain that in tlio end the county will avoid no li tlio annoyance and fruitless expense by establishing an institution at which to care for those whom it may find necassary to assist. We are pleased to note .the timely activity displayed by some of the more enterprising citizeus cf this county in the matter of fruit raising and packing instead of depending upon another state to furnish us with fhese necessaries and Bending large sums out of the country annually ia payment for them. With the excep tion of certain, tropical fruits, this sec tion of Oregon can produce fruit equal in quantity and quality to any other state, and the idea of us permit ting another state to furnish our mar ket with green and dried fruits to the total exclusion of our own pro ducts, is monumental misjudgmeot. Jt has been demonstrated lo a gratify ing degree that the fruits of this sec tion when properly prepared, have no superior in any njarket and none com mand a higher price or find a more ac tive demand. Apples have long been a marked success here and the prune industry is assuming gigantic propor tions. Statistics are not at hand, but the amount of money annually sent out of the stale for green and pre -served fruits, parlcularly the latter, is an item for sober consideration, and if the amounts could be tabulated in round numbers, would set the most indifferent to thinking. With proper attention fruit raising can be made pne of our greatest sources of rev enue and wo should come to a full and practical realization of this fact at once. . No deubl many of us are in urgent peed of prayers, but for our part, we cannot afford to pay quite so heavy a lum for one or two silent, little peti tions to tbe throne of grace. Columbia county's tax payer aro liberal, in the extreme, but we think it time to object when it comes to paying a man for attendance at church. Can Columbia county all'ord to pay t,en centa per mile milage and three dollars per day wages? It seems that such bills are all right. The way of the tranagfessor "am rugged" but it's all right, you know, for the county pay for it. Was anybody aware that tho 10th day of September, 1893, foil on an un judicial day? In the treasurer's report we fail to find any statement of the receipt of juoney collected for poll tax. Does Columbia county pay its piT "flgta for pleasure trips? Mrs. W. M. OathlM has obtained a four mouth's school on Kauvies Island. This present catching weather is very disagrcablu to farmer who have hay to nuilte or grain to thresh. It is re port nl 'hat county warrants are worth seventy-five cents on the dollar, tjuery, wonder if that is not tho kind of money the peoples' parly wants? Some Kansas man suid "It is a pity that wo can't have Columbia county eo'omist-iouers, for they would put a bounty on rasf hoppers and clean them out of the couuny." A young girl uiriwd in town Wed neMlay nijfht of 1-ist wee-It. She will make .lames tiiiileu's house her home. Jim says somebody must furnish pu pils for the school.
