Gove's death was instantaneous while Smith lin gered until Monday when he suo cumbed to the intent of the deadly missile. Both were well-known busi ness men iu Portland and had been foryears. .... We did not know llial there were o many people from Bauben, Cohun-' bia county, taking up timber land over In Tillamook county. In the Headlight there is one whole page of timber land notices and nearly one half el the applicants claim their resi dence at Reuben, this couuty ; but on examination, we find that no such a lot of people live or ever did live in this a'o'dnty, St. iiofens owes an apology for not .contributing something for the Colum bia county world's fair exhibit. The fact is our people up here have had no time to think of anything else but Water works and city hall, both of which, we are glad to say, are progress ing nicely. Whatever credit is due Columbia county for an exhibit at the fair belong exclusively to Clatskanie and Beaver valley. They are, in tact, tf'.far as we have been sble to learn, the only localities in the county that have made a persistent effort to have our resources placed before the peopl-i l Chicago. Hence where credit is due; there, it Wongs,' and may those atettons .reap their deserving reward, Mis M. E. Ths coal mine is shut down for tbe pres ent. Tb reason is not given publicly. Mr. Stesdmau is still confident thst there Is plenty of good paying eoal in this neighbor hood, in fact, cool can be found most any where between hers and Nehalera valley, and all that Is necessary Is proper develop ment to find the proper vein. Rut It looks peculiar thai an expert miner and a thor ough student of cosl and coaling could be fooled in hi theory and practice, and to be to confident as he without showing suoccss remains to be explained. Tbs gentlemen interested ha our sympathy. ' Tbey hav gone to a great deal of expense without any reward. It is likely they will not (ool any longeron the present prospect, and If they do any more it will likely be to sink a shaft. Every Indication shows that coal abounds in this region and all tbat is necessary Is capital to work It. We be love If the county court ean find any possible wsy to grant a premium on the discovery of coal they would bs Justified In doing It, that Is to offer a premium on not less than a three feet vein of good marketable coal, such ss mined on this coast, to tbs discoverer, and to open It in such a way as to b accessible to everybody, and not to accept any dia gram but to open it with a tunnel or shaft. One reason for this Is to invite compotent prospectors to look our county over. Of courie this bounty should not be extended to mine that are already opened, pros pected nor marked , but to such mines that show not leaa than a three-fcet vein of good marketable coal tbat could be readily sold in any of our coal markets; or, gives bounty on ths output of a mine. Tbe state of Washington is now offering a bounty on manufacturing sugar. Ws are of the opin ion that coal mining should be mors profit able than sugar manufacturing. - Your humble scribe took a tramp last week out In the country back of Hunters of deep snow and old buohelors, I found the bachelors very mncb like ths snow gradu ally disappearing. Where once a lonely bncbelor'a cabin stood la now occupied by a more thrifty class o( people, mostly mar ried men with families, and those that are not married intend to be. There are a good ninny new houses, neat cottages, handsome picket fences, and well-tilled garden patches which Is an evidence of thrift und economy, We cannot help but nodes the change that has come over this country in ths last half decade as to Improvements. The reason why this country is so much ad vanced is the excollent market the Co lumbia Slver Lumber A Fuel company furnished. This Is an evidence of what a local market can do fur a country where it is situated. Th ranchers took advantage of the opportunity and improved their farm, so that now they can live apparent ly Independent. CliATBKANIE. J. A. Fabrlqusha laid aside bis razor and taksn a trip to Portland this week. A meeting of citizens interested is an nounced' for Saturday afternoon next to discuss the propriety of taking advantage of tho new luw (or building a good public road between Kalnler and this place, There ought to be a good attendsncs. Th series of religious meetings began last week are kept up this week with a con siderable degree of Interest. John Parks is now In charge of the John son team hauling lumber from the Tlchenor mill. Johnson himself 1 Improving slowly but will not be able to drive team for some time h thinks. On Sabbath morning volumes of smoke rising from ths direction of th large barn on W, K. Tlchenor'. place started a num ber of our citizens out in that direction, who found that the barn, had taken firs In some unacoun table manner and was rapid ly burning to ths ground. Sevarsl bead of horse and cattle were in the barn but were all liberated by Jlmmie Doan and Gura- merdaio, who were near by, but the barn and all other contents were soon sntlrely consumed. Tbe building was a large and tins ons for ths purpose, and tbe loss fall quite heavy upon Mr, Tlchenor. Mr. Gillara returned on Friday from a week's visit to Portland aud elsewhere up ths river. The plsnk road Is now the main thor oughfare of the town, both for teams and pedextrians. Quite an Improvement is mad in front of Conyer' atore, where tbe plank have been extended to the porch, covering the mud and making it much more convenient to drive to the building. Special quarterly meeting services are an nounced (or next Saturday and Sunday at Merrill's hall. L. Ssldren has been back here for a few days and secured tbe right-of-way tor his logging mad up Knll creek. He announces his intention of beginning work in a few days and pushing th road to an early completion. DULENA. Weather very rainy and onsettled, with little prospects of a change for the better. Oscar Wagner ha been confined to th bouse (or two week past with la sripp or something of that nature, though at last accounts he was Impiovlng rupidly. Olson Bros, are putting in an engine (or hauling logs up tbe grsde on their skidroad. This will be a great improvement and the boys will, no doubt, make a success of the venture, as they thoroughly understand logging. Mrs. Wagner spent several days last week the guest of Mrs. Wonderly. Rev. Moore preached to a large and at tentive audience at the ball lost Sunday. Services the second Sunday In April at 2 p. He says he hue already turned out into the Clackamas 3,500,000 strong young salmon, and that he has an other million which will be ready to turn out some time next month. He also says that the brook trout spawn received from Michigan has hatched nice v. and he now baa zO.UUO younsr trout, not over one half an inch long.
