King John signed the great charter of the constitutional freedom of Britain, and how, after he bad signed it, he flung himself in burst of fury on the floor and gnawed the straw and rushes with which the floors of those days were strewn. Ho intimates in invertebrate English that the cigars. of which be has but 200 or 300, have in some way dodged the revenue. and so he, humble benefactor that he is, can sell them at about half what they would cost if the customs had not been defrauded. "Ah, senor, he ees a beeg, what you call, eht bar-gain f But" and here he lifts his shoulders to a level with his ears. "I must ra-turn to my dear Cuba, Come, senor, it ees bargain." Indianapolis journal. Heating, Cooling aud Ventilating. For more than twenty years the inventor of a new system for cool ing, heating and ventilating has been developing the methods which have been embodied m his invention. His system consists of circulating fresh air through interior zigzag par- traonea heating arums and coils ar ranged in a return zigzag flue ex tending for a suitable distance up tne chimney, around which the caping gases and smoke are made to pass. The heat that usually passes to waste outside the chimney is thus absorbed. Tins neat is tnen turned into a stream of fresh, clean air, driven through heating apparatus and con veyed with great velocity through a circulating pipe into as many differ ent buildings and apartments as may De aesirea. in this way a saving of irom 70 to 90 per cent in the cost of fuel is effected, and pure, wholesome air, which can be cooled if desired, can be obtained all over the bouse. That this is so may be shown by adding to water that is to be dis tilled a trace of magenta and a little salt The distilled water has no taste and is colorless. The magenta is generally deposited upon the sides or the boiling vessel. Brooklyn Eagle. MATS OFF TO A TENDERFOOT." The west Makes Dae Acknowledgment to a nr. rsyne trora tne Easi One by one the roses fade. Tha gentle tenderfoot from the distant east whose doings in our western country have been a subject for ridi cule, exaggeration and entertain ment suddenly turns the tables on his calumniators. We have all heard of his listening wide mouthed to the startling stories concocted by the wild westerner; of hia being made to dance to the tnusio of the fretful six shooter; of the innumerable jokos of which ho lias been made the butt; of tho joshing and joking he has ever been subjected to; of the ridiculous appearance ho has made in the pres ence of the cowboys, the brawny miner and the breezy denizens of the boundless t.prairie. Always a guy, usually a coward and generally a nerveless dude, the tenderfoot from east of the Mississippi has been the plaything and the shuttlecock of our worthy and self reliant citizens. But suddeuly all this Is changed, and the tenderfoot blossoms out to be "as mild a mannered man as ever scuttled ship or cut a throat" Short ly after the witching hour of mid night a train was held up on the Union Pacific, between this city and Cheyenne. Three masked robbers, looking like the heavy villains in the fourth act of the average melodrama, suddenly entered the coaches with glittering pistils cocked, and hoarsely demanded that every passenger hold up his bands. The train was filled with cowboys, Indians, typical west erners and blooded men from Mon tana. They glanced at the murder ous guns of the robbers, listened to the fierce demand and sullenly obeyed. All but one poor, lone ten derfoot, from away back east who instead of heeding the call of the thugs and thieves simply pulled his pistol and began, alone and single handed, such a murderous, steady and lively fire on the three masked holdups that one of them fell before the volley of cold lead, while hia companions, amazed and mortified, picked him up and hastened from the scene. Immediately following their de parture the valiant cowboys, In dians and "bad men" from Butte became intensely brave, grabbed their pistols and talked loudly for an hour or so about following the scoundrels and hanging them to the nearest tree. We rather regret that the action o Mr. Payne crushes to earth an idol we long have -cherished. That he alone and single handed should scatter the wild western robbers. while his terrified fellow passengers got under the seats and dodged out of sight of murderous muzzles, sets at denance our preconceived notion of the genus tenderfoot Ho is clear ly an iconoclast He violates all western tradition. If he or his kind repeats the instance related many more times, we shall begin to cherish a sneaking regard for the hopeful and brainy young fellow who comes out to our Rocky mountain region in search of fame and fortune, and glance somewhat askance at tho loud voiced, leather breeched and jaunty native who alleges that he keeps his own private graveyard, but who is frequently behind a tree when the bullets are thickest Colorado Sun. Children In the Caoeasns Mountains. Among the wilder tribes of the Caucasus every child is taught to use tne dagger almost as soon as he can walk. They first learn to stab water without making a splash, and by practice acquire an extraordinary command over the weapon. Their pistols are flintlocks, with long, very tarn barrels, and must have been handed down for generations. They do not look very formidable. The rows of little pouches worn across the breast do not contain cartridges. but small wooden cases tipped with bone or metal, and formerly used for carrying loose charges of powder and snot; now tbeyare only worn for ornament. All the men speak a little Kussian, but their own lan guage is more allied to Armenian. They belong to the orthodox church. London Saturday Review Whan Birds raee the Wind.
