ftaMai THE OREGON MIST. SUBSCRIPTION, J1.50 VRR YEAR. Bt. Helms, March U, 1893. Ttttcentennisl ot tlie discovery o( the Columbia river will be appro priately celebrated at Astoria on May 10,1892. At meeting of the ex ecutive committee of the Columbia River Centennial society, held In Portland an February 25 programme forth oecaaloa ttaa arranged. On May 10 there will probably be the largest crowd in Astoria that ever wit iietted that place. Candidates for the various coonty offices are becoming more numerous daily. There it at present no less than half a doten each for clerk and sheriff. Bat thia you can only find out by approaching them direct on Ihii question, and invariably they will gite you the wink and aay : "Now here; between you and I, I am a can didate, but jut dont you aay a word about it yet." Well, we believe thia is poor policy. If a man ie capable and aspire to an office be ahotikl not be Ashamed to aay en, in fact if man feels that he ia competent for a public trut t he should take a pride in having hit name used publicly in connection therewith. This "oat the quiet" way of carryiDg tin. conventions has been the scandal of American politics for years and should come to an end, eke corruption and bribery will contin ually be charged agulnst all political parties. One party is just as bad as the other in this respect. If a man is a candidate he should come out openly befere the time for the conven tion to meet and say sot for If be waits until the meeting of -that body and then succeeds in getting the nomina tion, "corruption,' "bribery ," and "ring" is always charged against him and bis party. If you want an office and feel that yon are capable of filling a public trust, in the name of common sense let it be known, otherwise how can you expect to win. The Astoria Herald of last week publishes their choice for officers both state, national, and district, as fol lows : For president, Bobert T. Lincoln, of Illinois; for vice-president, William McKinley.of Ohio; for con gress, V. K. Ellis, of Morrow county, for supreme judge, F. A. Moore, of Columbia county; for circuit judge, Fifth Judicial district, T. A. McBridu, of Clackamas couuty." It is too early to discuss national candidates as yet, but so far aa the dutiist nominees mentioned bv the Herald are con cerned, Ths Mist is in hearty accord A better! more just distribution of the candidates could not be mode. As to Mf, Ellis, we know nothing, only by reputation, that he ia an able lawyer and a resident of Pendleton, For circuit judge, Hon. T. A. McBride baa almost the undivided support of the voters of bis district. His official ac tions while district attorney for several years cannot be questioned. For su preme judge a more able,- competent man could not be found than Senator F, A. Moore, of St. Helens. He has been in public service in this county most of the lime for twelve years, served as county judge from 1880 to 1884, and in 1890 was elected to the state senate jointly for the counties of Columbia, Clatsop, Washington and Tillamook. At the last session of the legislature he was the author of or instrumental in securing the passage of a number of the best bills presented to that body, including among them the tlien fish license law and the Australian ballot law, both of which meet with popular favor among our people. As a lawyer be has few equals in the state. Tbk Astoria Chamber of Commerce seem determined to "bead off" any appropriation at this session of con gress, for the improvement of the Co lumbia river above that point, think ing by so doing they msy com pell a railroad to be built down the Colum bia to the sea by hampering the United States engineers so they will be unable to proceed with the river improvements already planned. The people of Astoria have heretofore been credited with better judgment than to undertake or to court such bulldozing measures. Tbey have recently sent another circular similar to the one ent about a month ago to congress stating that the soundings as taken by the United States engineers corps are incorrect, and that it would be a waste of money to make large appro priations for the improvement of the Columbia above Astoria, for the rea son that a chaonel cannot be made uniformly deep enough for vessels drawing twenty feet of water or even eighteen feet; and that to keep even an eighteen foot channel open would be a heavy constant drain upon the United States treasury. The Astoria pitets are the principal factors in this matter, having presented an estimated schedule of depths of water along the . river to the Astoria Chamber of Com tnerce, wbioh body, because it suiti their plans best, prefer to take rather than the careful soundings of the en gineers' corps. So far as causing the defeat or decreasing the appropriations for the Columbia river are Concerned they will not, ia the end, have any ef fect, hut it will probably lend to delay matters somewhat. Congress U or ganised fur the purpose of investigat ing these matters for their own sat isfaction, and in so important a measure as the improvement of one of the best streams in the Union they will uol be misled by such false state ments. WASHINGTON LETTER. (from Our Stgular Corrtsponiint Washington, D. C, March 4, 1898. Senator Gorman is credited with having originated a new scheme, hav ing for its object the capture of the presidency by the democrats. It be ing already apparent that in a vquurv fight between the repulilirau and dem ocratic parlies the ch.iuces uf stuwees are largely in favor ot the republican partv, the democratic busses have been cudgelling their brains to hutch n some underhanded method of aiding their party. Mr. Qon.imi ha found that method, ur thinks he has. The scheme is to give the electoral votes of four or five of the northwestern states to the peoples' party, which would, according to the circulation made, throw the election of provident into the houee, and ot vice president into the senate, giving the democrats the prei-ideot and the republicans the vice-president. The details of the scheme am very shrewdthis ex posure may cause a change in them the intention being to keep the whole thing in the hands of a few men. sworn X secrecy, in each of the states selected unt 1 election day. The usual process of selecting democratic elec tors is to be gone through with, in or der to blind the republicans ; but on election day the democratic tickets are to contaiu only the names of the elec tors of the peoples' party. This is a nico little sthenic to capture the voles of republican members of the farmers' ailiauce for the democratic party, but ooW that it lias become know n it ia not probable that many republican, will be caught. Three thousand men and women, having influence, direct and indirect, with probably on million voters eu rolled in the ranks of the Various la bor organisations of the country, or controlled by the oewsiwp-r wnh newsap-r " , which many of them are or have been I connected, are anxiously w Htm to see Whether deraucratiu fwrrmiiiy.is to keep their livt-s and health in the danger to which they are now exposed bv refusiue to provide fu a new gov ernment printing office buildine. The 3000 men ami women a e the em- pluvea compelled to rta their health and lives in the present building in order to earn lively hood for llie- selves and families. Representatives of more than 300 of the largest lumber firms tit the United States met here tbts Week to protest against the passage "f the bill placing lumber on the free lint. A resolution was uuanimoii.-h adopted reciting that the lumber industry ia the largest single industry in America, employing inure than aDy other; that, owing to the peculiar interest of the lumber industry the formation of trusts, combines and other organisa tion injurious to the consumers are not porible ; hat, to-day the American tariff ia the ouly protection which the country has aauinsl abroliiu ruin; that, this tariff, if removed, would mean the success of Canadian in teresta, and the price of Canadian stnmnaice would b iiicread, not lowered, and the itnjort duties now part of the revenue of this country would be lost; that, the queKtiou. therefore, is whether the lumber re sources of Canud i shall be developed or the Iwniber interests of l hi country, uarticularlv of the southern and Fa cific coast section, be protected ; that, in view of these considerations this convention earnextl and reiectfDlly protests aiiaiust the pasge by con irress of any leei.Ulion lookinif to the removal of duty on imported lumber The democrats of the house are having a hard time getting their free trade machine to work. The three bills placing respectfully wool, binding twine and cotton ties ana cotton osg ging on the free list, which were re ported to the himse esrly in the Week, Lwere to have been called up this week but the sickness of Mr. Boriniter. who was to have made the opening speech for free wool, mode a change neces sary, and it is now stated that Mr. McMill n. who. like Mr. miiis. is op tinged to the bomoepathie method of attacking the McKinley tariff la which is stronger than ever since its approval by the supreme conit, will, bv the irony of fate, make the first speech in favor of what be Is known to be at heart opposed to. Odd isn't it? The republicans have not fully He termined what part they will lake riext Mottdavi when the house i to vole upon the resolution reported from the committee on rules, naming March 22, 23 and 24 for the considera tion or the Bland free coinage hill Two proposition are under considera tion. Oue to vole solidly against the resolution and the other not ttf vote at all. The anti-silver democrats are confident that if they will do the firt the resolution will be defeated, which would kill the free coinage bill for the Dresent. Hn cencu has been held and none Is nrobable. and it is re - rHwl aa certain that a few reuubli- nibli- cans less than ten-will, in any event, ynte for the resolution because of j p opl-living away in the l.ackw.-xl-, their favoring free coinage. j Hauling lumber a l-mg wav nver bad Just one year from to-day a repute r ads lo ks delightful But tHk a lican will be inaugurated president of i filrict like this, thai i. at the lea the United States.
