ST. HELENS. OREGON. FRIDAY. OCTOBER 8. 1920. PAGE SIX SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, FIRE PREVENTION DAY 9aturday, October 9. is fire prtven tion day in this state. Governor 01 oU's proclamation is i.s tollovs: Uocause the prosperity and happi ness of our people r.nd the economic welfare of our stale are directly de pendent upon thD production and conservation of wealth, liecr.use loss from fire Is cn Im pediment to the progress and a drain upon the resources of the strte of Oregon which takes toll from every individual and Industry, Because of the 1919 fire loss of ov er two million dollars is ns tangible and rer.l as if stolen in sold coin irom our treasuries. . Because the extravagant destruc tion of property is second only to the appalling sacrifice of human life, Because at least CO per cent of thU loss can be saved if every individual in the state realizes the personal re sponsibility and practices fire pre vention, Therefore I, Ben W. Olcott, Rover nor of Oregon, in order to awaken our people to a realization of their patriotic duty, do hereby proclaim Saturday, the ninth day of October, 1920,. as fire prevention day, urg'ng that on this day the people of t.ie state give attention to fire protection. That each inspect his own premis es for flro hazards. That general educational exercise, be held in all schools' of the state on fire prevention. That special atention be given to the subject from the press and the pulpit. That all officials and legislators give thought to their duty in ths matter of providing for public safe ty from fire, That every individual make a firm resolution not to relax their vigilance tgainst the danger from fire during the coming year. Given under my hand and the seal of the state of Oregon this 20th day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and twenty. Quits Backward Said the waiter to a noisy card party in a hotel bedroom: "I've bcn sent to ask you to make less noise, .gentlemen. The gentleman in the next room says he can't read."
