Newspaper Page TextPAGE FOUR THE St. HELENS MIST, FRIDAY. JUNE 25, 1920, REVENUE OFFICIALS AFTER TAX LAXITY The following statement Is Issued bv Collector of Internal' Revenue, Milton A. Miller: "In this, as in every other section of the country, there will be con ducted during the wext two months an extensive tax drive for the col lection of delinquent sales and other miscellaneous taxes, such as the so called luxury tax, the soft drink tax, the manufacturer's tax, the tax on jewelry and works of art. and the tax 01 toilet articles and proprietary medicines. Reports 01 laxity on the part of dealers aud other persons responsible for the return and collec tion of these taxes have reached the Bureau cf Internal Revenue fro.u many sources. "To remedy this condition, a large force of revenue officers will be put in the field, and it is expected to re sult in the collection of millions of dollars in delinquent taxes. "Information from the' Sales Tax Lull of the Bureau of Internal Rev enue is that many- dealers n soft drinks aud ice cream are either keep ing no record of the amount of .lax collections from such sales, cr t hat the record is insufficient or Incor rect. "Special attention will be directed to the collection of this tax as well as to the tax on toilet articles and proprieary medicines. Through the failure of retailers o collect In full the tax of 1 cent for each 25 cents or fraction "thereof the amount for wMch toilet articles and proprietary medicines are sold. It is estimated the government is losing several mil lion dollars annuaiy. The tax is collected by means of stamps ranging from 1 to 40 cents, which tho law provides shall be affixed by the deal er, and cancelled. "It is the intention to conduct as thorough and effective a campaign as possible in such a way as to bring to justice willful violators, and cause no embarrassment to merchants and business men who honestly aro en deavoring to comply with tho revenue laws."
