No group of American citizens is
better qualified to interpret and ex
press tlie patriotic thought of the
American people than are the 34
bishops of the Methodist Episcopal
church, says the Spokane Spokesman
Review. The public will therefore
turn with interest to the address de
livered on their behalf at tho quad
rennial conference of that great
church in DesMoines Sunday Af
firming that foundations are dis
turbed and conditions volcanic the
bishops declare that
Everywhere free institutions
are threatened. The church
must not fail in the effort to
preserve them. We cau not
give sympathy to Bolshevism,
whether of the red mob or the
soft sentimentalist; to anarchy,
whether of the street or the
chair.
Between the radical and the
reactionary; between the an
archist and t lie contender for
special privilege, feudal brutality
and domination of wealth; be
tween radicalism and standpat
ism; between autocracy and
anarchy; between tyranny of
wealth and tyranny of strength,
the church must this day speak
in clear tones and minister to
order and righteousness. Those
who array class against class,
man against man, in any manner
are not friends of society.
On that inspiring platform all the
great Christian denominations of
this country are in full accord. The
sentiments here spoken by the Meth
odist bishops have been affirmed
again and again by the bishops of
the Episcopal church, the high pre
lates of the Catholic church and the
leaders of other denominations.
It could not be otherwise, for
Christianity and class hatred are in
compatible, and the spirirt of Chris
tianity is irrevocably set, as the
Methodist bishops so well express it,
alike against the tyranny of wealth
and the tyranny of strength.

which is preparing to launch a neiv
political party on a platform that is
a cross between single tax and social
ism, announces that it "represents"
the great masses of the American
people.
Where do these committeemen get
their commissions to represent the
great masses of the American people,
or to represent anyhody, as a matter
of fact, other than themselves? Who
chose them as representatives of pub
lic sentiment? Ordinary political
parties have their machinery for the
election of representatives; they have
primaries and conventions cf the peo
pie at which such representatives are
chosen.
But the Committee of Forty-Eight,
like many other organizations pro
fessing to represent the great body
of the people, is entirely a self consti
tuted and self designated affair: It
may with propriety claim to represent
certain theories or fads in politics,
but it has no warrant for the asser
tion that it represents more than an

for getting one's authority to repre-
nits peopie witnout their consent
from voices in the air and other
sources no more tangible.
But why not let a few of the people,
at least, in on some of these move
ments to represent and emancipate
them, Why not. In these matters,
have a little cf that "self determi
nation of peoples" so much talked
about and so little practiced bv some
folks who think they are divinely
ordained to swagger around as ol.
