BY-GONE DAYS Twenty-Eight Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist May 6, 1892.) E. H. Flugg, editor and proprietor ol the Marion County Democrat, was in St. Helens last week. Lena Blakesley was absent from school Monday and Tuesday on a visit to Westport. School notes. A very valuable improvement In the way of a new sidewalk was laid in front of the court house this week. A slight earthquake was felt here on the 17th of last month. Deer Island. Charles F. Doon has resigned as county assessor, and Hon. Judson Weed has been appointed by the county court in his stead. Twenty-Five Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist May 10, 1895.) Married At the Oriental hotel in this city on Saturday, May 4, by Justice Swager, F. L. Stevens and Lena Vandermost. Born At Yankton, Friday. May 3. to Mr. and Mrs. L. Barger, a daughter. The Quincy republican club held a meeting Tuesday night and elected R. S. Payne, A. T. Laws and George Hayes delegates to the young men's club which meets in Portland May 22. The city council held an adjourned meeting Tuesday night, at which time the contract was awarded to John Gilmore for furnishing the oil and lighting the street lamps for a period of one year, for $117.50, his being the lowest bid submitted. Mrs. J. G. Muckle visited Portland Wednesday. There is money in salmon at 5 cents per pound, provided you can catch any. Twenty Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist May 4, 1900.) The carpenters are rushing the work on the Methodist church edifice In this city. When finished the structure will be a decided credit to the city and a valuable property. Mrs. M. S. Lillach and three daugli. ters of Belmont, Wis., mother and sisters of Mrs. Martin White, arrived in this city on Thursday of last week. They expect to make Oregon their future home. A meeting of the bicyclists of this place, Warren and Scappoose has been called for Warren on Saturday, at which time it is hoped to perfect the orgadization of a local bicycle club and provide means for promot ing the plan of constructing a bicycle path from St. Helens to the county line toward Multnomah county. Tho army recruiting office has an nounced that the effects bureau at Governor's Island, New York har bor, hus in Its possession 82 finger rings and 124 watches, which have been turned over to the war depart ment, without ary explanation or any information as to their owners. Tho recruitng office suggested that former soldiers who lost such articles in Frnnce communicate with the chief of the transportation serv ice, at the war department In Wash ington, D.
