Bumgardnei of St. Johns, spent Sunday and Mon day with relatives here. Thirty-two thousand school child ren in the schools' of Paris were re ceiving regular lunches from the Red Cross during the past year. Harry Bennett was In Portland ou Tuesday. . . . Paul C! Morton and. Lester Means, Portland traveling men, were her Monday calling on the trade. The American Red Cross provided one out of every - 10 soldiers In France with a corn cob pipe. A St. Helens friend has received word from Captain Arnesen of the schooner Laihana, that he had safely arrived at Durban, South Africa. Tin, vessel loaded a cargo at St. 'Helens and wailed the latter part of July for the Dark Continent. Tlio trip, accord ing to the captain, was uneventful. Private Henry Harrison writes his father, Percy Harrison, saying he Is stationed at Fort Sun Fordyco, Texas. The lmp:er.slon among the soldlers was that they would he mustered out some time before the first of the year. Young Harrison has been in the army for two years. He was. stationed at Honolulu bu fore being transferred to the Txus camp. The merchants report the holi day trade as quite satisfactory. The peoplo, generally, are observing the suggestion to shop early and by so doing are favoring both themselves and the homo merchants. The Christmas stocks of the merchants this season exceed that of any form er year and comparatively few peo ple are going to Portland to do their Christmas shopping. Laden with 1150,000 feet of lumber and piling and carrying a number of passengers, the steamer, Frank Stout, sailed late Saturday night for San Pedro, ;Vla 8an Francisco. The Stout, which was built by the St. Helens Shipbuilding company for the C. & O. Lumber company of 11 rook -Ings, Oregon, has steam power in stead of the Internal combustion en gines, as was originally planned. Owing to the war, the Dlotixel engines could not be obtained, so the old re. liable steam power was Installed. She is twin screw, has a 750 h p. engine and mukes about 8 knots In favorable weather and sea. Seven hundred portable houses for various uses were sent to France by the Red Cross. t The S. P. ft' S. officials have mad a great Improvement In the Jltnoy train. This train is patronized by many St. Helens' people and the rail road people, appreciating this pa tronage, have put on different equip ment. This new equipment consists of an old engine which was used on the Corvallls & Eastern railroad 25 years ago. Coach No. 18 (whicn is new renumbered) was on the A. it C. sixteen years ago and then a light er and more comfortable coach, which was a part of the original equipment of the A. & C. R. R. company In 11100. The people of St. Helena and Rainier and other towns along the line, doubtless appreciate the considera tion shown them by the railroad of ficials.
