COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER OREGON, THE FIRST STATE COLUMBIA, THE FIRST COUNTY In all war activities, Oregon ranks first. The percentage of volunteers in the army and navy from the grand old state of Oregon, is larger than that of any other state la the union. In Red Cross subscriptions, Oregon was the first state to go over the top and in Liberty Loan subscriptions, Oregon has been first in every loan. Of course we all feel proud of the record our state has made, and justly are we proud. But coming right home, we people of Columbia county also have something of which we are proud and that is, while Oregon as a state is first among all the states in the Liberty Loaus, Columbia county is first anions the Oregon counties. The average for the entire state in Liberty Loan subscriptions Is 140 per cent and Columbia count) 'b aver age on all three leans is 170 per cent. The Fourth Loan is now facing us and residents of the county must be a unit in maintaining the enviable record the county has heretofore set. The Loan Drive does not open until September 28th, but the majority of us have made up our minds just what we are going to do, and having made up our minds, let us do it NOW. CAMOUFLAGE Publisher Jackson of the Oregon Journal is endeavoring to have the law requiring the publication of the delinquent tax list, repealed. "Marse" Jackson, cays it will be a saving to the taxpayers. You prope-ty owners who have paid your taxes on time, have never noticed a charge for pub lication of delinquent taxes, have you? "Mirso" Jackson's fight Is against the Oregouian and ho Is try ing to camouflage to cover the real issue. The election of Chamberlain and West on the "non-partisan" de mocratic ticket is sufficient evidence that "Mtirso" Jackson is ri;lit there cn the camouflage stuff. Heretofore he has gotten by with it, but it re mains to be seen if he can put a single tax bill under the guise of a tax economy proposition. Read the bill aud judge for yourself. LOANS FOR CATTLE RAISKRS Secretary McAdoo announces that the war finance corporation has per fected its plans for making direct loans under the provisions of Sec tion 9 of the war finance corporation act to individuals, firms, and cor porations, whose principal business Is the raising of live stock, includ ing cattle, sheep, goats and hogs. The corporation has decided to create, under authority of the act,, two agencies, one at Kansas City and j one at Dallas. These agencies will be known as the Cattle Loan Agen cies for the War Finance Corpora tion and their business will be con fined entirely to the consideration of applications for direct loans to cr.ttlemen. RECKLESS DRIVERS A MENACE In Recorder Quick's court Wednes day afternoon, was hailed a certain party charged with reckless driving. After hearing the testimony, the re corder Imposed a fine of 25 and cost and admonished the young man to not make it again necessary for court action as to reckless driving. The recorder is right. The speed fiend and the reckless driver should have no 3tanding in court. He shows utter disregard for the lives and safety of others. He is a menace and the sooner he.is curbed, the easier LABOR'S GREAT RECORD IN WAR Figures made public by the war department August 1 speak eloquent ly concerning what labor has done for tho war. Since April 1, 1917, the army of the United States has been supplied with 5,377,000 overcoats, 8,069,000 woolen coats, 10,507,000 pairs of woolen breeches and 55,958,000 pairs of wollen socks. Motor trucks to the number of 17,988 have been Bent overseas and 9,860 motor ambu lances have been provided. These nre merely a few items that show what it means to speed up for victory. - What's the use to watt until the week afterwards when you can buy your Liberty Bond the week before. You have made up your mind to by a bond, so go to the bank and sub scribe for It now. Columbia county must be over the top the morning of September 28th, when the drive begins. The state highway commission has received word from the government authcrlties at Washington, that nec essary road work In Oregon should be continued. This ruling must be quite a shock to those penurious tax payers who are in favor of stopping all work for the porlod of the war. Good roads and successful war work go together. The Liberty Loan Day at the Coun ty Fair Is Thursday, September 19th. Instead of Baying "How Do You Do" ask this question, "Have You Sub scribed for your Liberty Bond," and If the reply is In the affrimatlve, then ehake hands. Mayor SaMon appointed a dock committee ani it was his honor's wish that suchVommlnee investigate the dock sltuatron andu-eport to the council. The cdrnmltteX obeyed the mayor and madel their recommenda tion, but theia, recommendation might as well not have been made, for the matter still hangs fire. Columbia County is the first coun ty in the state as to subscriptions for Liberty Bonds. It's a good record. Let us keep it first. The banks have application blanks you may fill them out NOW. It seems poor business to allow the telephone company to put Iq new poles In the sidewalk along Columbia street. All the poles will have to be moved and whenever the phone com pany has to put in a new -ne, it should be put In the right place. That auto truck driver who ran over and killed one dog and wounded another and then didn't even stop to see what his reckless driving did, didn't have a heart one thousandth part as big as the dumb brutes he killed or maimed. Jackson The following resolutions were adopted at the recent session of the Oregon State Editorial association at Coos Bay, August 9, 10. 11, 1918 The association fitly denounced the two Jackson bills relating to the country press and exposed the mo tives behind those two initiative j measures: Resolved, that the members of this association pledge their continued and undivided support to the govern ment in all Its activities designed for the successful prosecution of the war, that we fully realise that the winning of the present great con flict Is paramount to all other issues now before the people of the United States, and with this end in view tho State Editorial association pledges Its undivided support to the government in Its prosecution of the world con flict that we may have a lasting peace only on those terms dictated and promulgated by the allied forces, without the earmarks of having been made in Germany. Resolved, that we are not in sym pathy with the campaign being wag ed by the magaxlnes to do away with the plan of paying postage under the tone system; and that we believe that the government should make t distinction between thoce papers whose primary purpose Is that of a news medium and those publications devoted more exclusively to enter tainment and special features; and that we recommend that Congress simplify the tone system of paying postage by abolishing the present method of making a different charge for the news sections than for the advertisings sections.
