An elder daughter of Mrs. Cloch nour has Just arrived from Minnesota to help care for her mother, who Is sick In a Portland hospital. She will look after her younger brothers and sisters. A farewell party was given at the home of L. M. Duncan lust Monday night. A general good time cake and punch and tearful goodbyes were the order of the evening. The liun cans left for their new home at l'uy allup, Wash., Wednesday. The reception given last Friday night to our teachers nt the school house was well attended. Mrs. I la el West gave an address of welcome In behalf of the board and parents. Dr. lllatcbford gave a welcome In behalf of the business men. Mr. Down, as sistant principal, gave the response In behalf of the teachers. Henry Wist Is again In a hospital in Portland. Henry hud been to Day ton to haul in Prof. Dodsou's furni ture. He started out Saturday morn ing and loatled up toward evening, driving back all night. About 6 o'clock in the morning the truck run over the bank, smashing up the furni ture and broko Wist's arm. Henry is having hard luck of lute. was very encouraging and a number have started knitting at home . sides sewing on Krlduy. It Is very much desired that more women will come and take part In this most necessary work of sewiiiK for the sol diers. Mrs. Helen Connoll donated a bolt of outing flannel which Is be ing made into bed box, while other material Is obtained from the Port land chapter. The postponed meeting of the Wo man's Club was held Wednesday, September 12, at the home of Mrs. S. L. Itutler. Owing to the distance, the club went prepared to spend the day, and the bountifully tilled table proved the preparation entirely ade quate, in the afternoon the regular order of the day was carried out. Hull call was answered by "Some thing I am thankful for," und com ing so soon after the "preparedness demonstration" brought forth much applause. Mrs. Fred Adams rend an Interesting letter from the French front. A letter from Mrs. KoenlK expressing her appreciation of the club was read by tho secretary, and ono from Mrs. Funk, chairman of Company 11 Auxiliary, Portland, ac knowledging receipt of towels. The day was very happily and profitably spent end overyono felt well repaid for climbing the hill. Owing to the Salem fair, the next meeting will be Wednesday, October 3, with Mrs. J L. Wlckershatn, Cloverhlll Farm. Here seems to the reporter a good place to acknowledge the unfailing courtesy und though! fulness of the husbands of the club members. Kver since the organization of the club there bus never been a meeting but that someouc-s husband has helped to make that meeting a success by some art of thouKhtfulness, and the day at Mrs. Ilutler's was no excep tion. Linton, who Is connected with the police force in Portland, has been visiting his brother, Philip S. Linton, this week. They report that part of Washington more damaged by the dry weather than Oregon. Tho meadows had not sturt ed to Ret green though they hud rain a weak before wo did. A tragedy was narrowly averted last Sunday morning on the Deer Is land logging road, when a defective switch caused a loaded train to leave tho track. Fortunately tho crew Jumped in time to escape the wreck. The train was not again ready for service until Weduecday afternoon. Miss Wharton, of Portland, who has been spending tho summer at Columbia City, w.-.s a pleasant visitor to. the Bed Cross Auxiliary's work room Friday. Tho registration of women called for by the Woman's Council of Na tional Defonso Is proceeding slowly In thin vicinity. All women who havo not been registered are uHked to go to Mrs. Nina Bush as soon as pos sible. While this registration Is pure ly voluntary, women overywhere should respond to the efforts of those who are trying to aid In the national defense. On Friday afternoon the Bed Cross Auxiliary met In the Grange hall, which had been made very comfort able, and convenient with cutting tables, sewing machines, easy chairs and a fire. Tho work accomplished A ten-days rain has spoiled all the grain that did nut get threshed be fore the rain. Some Intend to thresh though if this sunshine keeps with us long enough, as they can use the grain for hog feed or for the cows, but it is sprouted too much for any other purpose. Iris and Sarah Buker und Miss Parr visited with Mrs. E. B. North Sunday. This rain sent Mr. Montague, the fire warden, back to his homo In Portland. Mrs. J. Smith gavo a wool picking last Tuesday for a 20-pound mat tress for her daughter, Mrs. Virgil Powel. Mrs. Smith served a bounte ous uinner ui i o ciock. All ex pressed themselves as having spent a very pleasant day. Mrs. J. P. Shce ley, Mrs. H. Cbrtutensen, Mrs. A. Blaker and babies, Mrs. H. L. Wild man, Mrs. A. V. Mow and babies, Mrs. K. Lavendar and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Throop and babies were pres ent. There were five men present but they kept mum as to Whether they could curd wool or no. The roads certainly are a fright In places. Tho new grades are almost Impassable, not having been graveled before the rain. Grandma Mills Is still In the Hills boro sanitarium. She is gaining slowly and will be ablo to come home soon. Fritz Brown is still at the hospital In Portland. His friends are glad to heur that ho Is getting along as well as could be expected after such a se ven accident. Elmer Lavendar, who hus been on the fire trail below Mist, returned home last Sunday. Tho ruin has put as top to even the bonfires, so no moro danger to the foreBt this fall. Tom Throop's Chevrolet was very badly treuted In Timber tho other day, a freight truln accidentally mutilating one side quite badly. Mor al Don't park your autos too near tho railway.
