ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. JULY 13. 1917 Issued Every Friday by THE MIST rrHUSHIXG COMPANY S. C. MORTON. .Editor and Maungcr SUBSCRIPTION RATES One Year tl.fttt 8U Months 7B Entered as second-class matter, January 10th, 1912. at the Postofflce at St. Helens, Oregon, under the act of March 3rd, 1879. COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER "I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which it stands, oue Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All." THE SPIRIT OF 'Ttl There Is a rank due to the 1'nited States among nations which will be withheld. If not absolutely lost, by the reputation of weakness. If we desire to avoid Insult, we must be able to repol it. If we desire to se cure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are, ut all times, ready for war. Maxims of Washington as arranged by John F. Schroeder, D. D. If Washington could see our sol diers In France, ready and waiting for the opportunity to strike for the preservation of democracy; our navy in, English waters protecting and up holding the rights of the seas, he would be convinced that the spirit of '76 has been handed down from gen eration to generation unit that it is the spirit of 1917. Appreciation and thanks of the Mist's efforts to give publicity to the war census is contained in the follow ing letter from Adjutunt General White. The fact that the registra tion in all sections of the country was carried out with promptness and without confusion was undoubtedly because of the wide publicity given by the press of the country, and the alms and Justice of the census was fully understood, so no person with in the designated ages could plead Ignorance. General White writes as follows: To the Editor of the St. Helens Mist, St. Helens, Ore. Dear Sir: I am writing to convey to you the thanks of Governor Withy combe, and of myself, for the co operation of the St. Helens Mist in the preliminary campaign of educa tion undertaken by this office to in form the people about war census re quirements. Publication in your is sue of May 25, under double column heading, "Important Facts to Re member About the War Census," has been noted and Is especially appreci ated. Very truly yours. GEORGE A. WHITE. Adjutant General. The county court of Jackson coun ty has asked the state highway com mission for $12,000 to help build a road to the Blue Ledge mines. Per haps the commission will grant the request of the county officials. It might be a good Idea for the county court of Columbia county to ask the commission for some funds to aid iu tho construction of the St. Helens- FOR GOOD PLUMBING COME TO ME PLUMBING, STEAM HEATING and SHEET METAL WORKS I also carry a full line of Stationary Wash Tubs and Bath Room supplies. One of my specialties is Steam Heating and Fitting. R. CONSTANTIN St. Helens, A. T. KIEL AN GENERAL MERCHANDISE West St. Helens (Houlton) Pittsburg highway. There can he u harm In nsklug and the good boot says "ask and ye shall receive." Other counties have been asking and get ting, but thus far Columbia lias neither asked or received. When the water Is running into the trough ami it is lull, is the best time to begin to dip. With representatives from 'every county almost daily on the job and the highway commission grunt I lug niuny requests, we are afraid that I if Columbia county does not wake up that when they do get to the walei trough they will find it empty. The activities of the I. W. W. are giving the Mule and government au thorities much trouble. According to Information received at the gov ernor's office ni Salem, an army or the "1 won't work" fellows will soon Invade Oregon. In times of peace u tolerant public will endure much from this element, who have no re sped for and are contemptuous of the government, but at this time, when the nation Is at war, their ac tions will not he condoned. As yet the vanguard of this rrmy has not reached St. Helens, and it is to be hoped that for the good of the town that they will pass us by, as it is a difficult matter to deal with those who are hostHe to all employers and employes and have a contempt for the law and a hatred of the govern ment. The Southern Pacific Company Is j building a new depot at Salem; the j little town of Gardiner is to have a new passenger station. The South i eru Pacific Company has furnished a ' modern depot at Reedsburg, and the Spokcne, Portland & Saa'.tle Com i puny has a 2x4 red shack about the i size of a box car which they use for their St. Helens depot. The meeting of the btate highway commission with the citizens of St. Helens ended Just about where it started. The commissioners, before the meeting, had driven over the present used road and had Investi gated tho feasibility of the old route. We bellevo the commissioners are fair minded men and will do what they think Is the best for the Inter ests of the state, the county and the city of St. Helens, and we will gladly leave the decision entirely in their hands. : Even if the paved highway should go through West St. Helens, the city council does not intend that every ! autolst should p:ss through the cit at a oO-miles per hour clip, and they ' are not counting on any speed ordi nance to keep the autoist from : through in that way. Instead, they will offer inducements for the trav eler to stop within the city and par take of the city's hospitality. With this end in view, the council will clean up the park, lnstr.ll conveni ences for the traveler, make of the park a free camping end amusement grounds and thus encourage the tired tourist to stop. Those who leave 1 Portland for a spin to Seasido or Astoria, have as their objective point those places and are not going to stop here anyhow, unless it be for more gaiioline or repairs. It is the leisure ly motorist wo should desire, and to that class the hospitality of the city will bo offered. Let's make the town attractive to the stranger and we will be the gainers no matter on which side of the railroad track the high way is located.
