Hev. Johnston gave an Inspirational address which was very beautiful, the deep thoughts being clothed In such elegant language as to elicit expres sions of admiration. L. O. Allon rep resented the O. A. R. and gave an interesting Impromptu speech. The assemblage Joined In singing "Amer ica," after which a procemlou of six teen children, each bearing a bunch of flowers, marched arouud and placed flowers on each of the graves of the sixteen soldiers who are rest- lug In the cemetery, over which had been placed a flag. The decorating of the graves was under the direction of Mrs. Getchell, who ably performed her part. Ilenedlftlon by Hev. John ston closed the exercises. An account of the school alumni waa read by Jennie L. Jepson, class of It 16. Rev. John ston, of Scappoose, gave the address to the class of 1(17, which was en Joyed by all. His subject was "Why Do We Live!" He then presented the diplomas to the class. The class roll numbers four: Wilson 8. Ack ley, Gerald W. Avery, Grace E. Bam forth and Clarence F. Parks. Mrs. Clarke received many compliments on the work done by ber pupils. It all showed that much work, care and training had been given, both by her pupils and herself. She has been a most earnest worker In the school and haa been most successful In her work. Thero are about 34 pupils en rolled In the school, and Mra. Clarke haa had all grades, from primary to the ninth. 8he hss been reelected to teach our school next term. The Taxpayera' Improvement Club of Chapman and Rpltzenberg met Sat urday evening. May 28, and enjoyed a social evening. A ahort business session wss followed by a program consisting of songs and recitations. Light refreshments were served, con sisting of coffee, tea, sandwiches and cake. Our club was organized In August, 1916, to promote the im provement and sociability of ouri WARREN Memorial services were held at the Swedloh Lutheran cemetery. Rsv. Nystrum gave a very Interesting pa triotic speech, and selections werj rendered by the orchestra and choir In tho evening an interesting pro gram was rendered at the church by the Young People's society. Adolph Johnson, of Llnnton, spent Wednesday In Warren visiting with friends and relatives. The Industrial Club held its regu lar meeting at the schoolhouse Tues day afternoon and It was well at tended. Reports of the projects out lined by the club were read and dis cussed. A debate was planned for the next meeting, which will be hold June 12. Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Swenson and P. Peterson were .in Portland Wednesday, la attendance at the fu neral of Mr. Bergstrom, who . died Tuesday. The patriotic meeting held at the Erickaon ball Saturday night under the auspices of the Woodmen of the World was well attended. SPITZENBERG The new road up Scappoose creek known as the Fink road is nearing completion and will soon be open for travel. Road Supervisor J. M. Poin ter has done good and economical piece of work on this road. The Spltzenberg school has closed a very successful term. An enter tainment at the schoolhouse Thurs day evening and a picnic Friday were enjoyed by the scholars and parents. 'Five young people graduated, which la a vesy good record. BACHELOR FLAT An auxiliary to the Portland chap ter of the American Red Cross was organized here Saturday evening. Tho membership at the present time !s 40, but It Is expected that the mem bership wll steadily Increase. The members of the auxiliary are enthusi astic in their work and appeul to all citizens of Columbia county to Join them In the work and make Columbia county the banner county of the state. The Deor Island auxiliary will - be glad to add to its membership those from other towns or communities. The membership fee Is $1 per year. The Godfrey hall was appropriate ly decorated tor tho occasion, large American and English flags sdding to the attractiveness. All members Joined In singing "America." W. J. Koenig acting as leader. The civil ian relief committee, military relief tommlttee, membership committee and finance committee were appoint ed and all of the members of the commlttoes montioned entered upon their work with enthusiasm. School closed on the 28th Inst. There was no entertainment thla year but nearly all of the scholars passed their examinations and Bachelor Flat is Justly proud of Its bright children.
