ST. HELENS MIST, FRIDAY. APRIL 13. 1917 Issued Every Friday by THK MIST PIBL1SHIXG COMPANY 9. C. MORTON . . Editor aud Manager SIBSCRIPTION'hATES One Year $1.50 Six Month 75 Entered as second-class matter, January 10th, 1912. at the Postofflce at St. Helens, Oregon, under the act of March 3rd, 1878. COUNTY OFFICIAL PAPER "I pledge allegiance to my Flag, and to the Republic for which It stands, one Nation indivisible with Liberty and Justice (or All." NO MIDDLE tiKOl'XO The call to arms nun come. Con gress and the president have declared the United Stales at war with Ger many, and we are at war. Tliero can be no middle ground. We must be either loyal or disloyal. Germany lias forced the issue, and America has accepted the challenge. If some of us were in favor of peace before the declaration of war, we can no? uow be in favor tf peace if it has to be bought by the sacrifice of this government's digulty and honor. We are at war, there can be no turning back. America will respond to the call and the nation's honor will be upheld by its patriotic sons, for this honor was upheld by our forefathers who gave us liberty. REASONS FOR THE WAR Oftentimes the question is asked why we are at war. Summarizing the events of the past two yer.rs, the an swer, as wo see It is very plain, and shows conclusively that Germany is to blame. 1st. She has defiantly murdered American citizens and laid the re sponsibility to us. 2nd. She has repeatedly violated the l.-.ws of all civilized nations and brazenly asked, to do about it?" 3rd. She has plotted to destroy our factories und interrupt our activ ities on land and sea and also plotted to incite Japan and Mexico to stab us in the back. 4th. She outraged the whole civil ized world when sho shot and dyna mited her way through a little non belligerent nation and caused untold suffering to innocent people. 5th." Wholesale murder of inno cent noncotnbatauts. 6th. Hundreds of crimes that are barbarous and too numerous to be mentioned. These are only some of the rea sons why Germany Is to blnmo and why an outraged nation has taken action against the arch enemy of democracy and decent respect for obligations between nations upon which civilization depends. Probably it will he a war to the death, but the matter must be set tled for ell timo to come. Hl'MAXK SOCIF.TVS WKKK "Bo Kind to Animals Week" will be observed by humr.ne uocieties everywhere April 16 to 22, ending with Humane Sunday, when the churches will feature the occasion with special services. Schools will call attention to the kind things that may bo done for animals and the sev eral thousand humane societies will ask the co-operation of individuals In seeing thut horses are supplied with drinking watsr, heavy grades on Btreets sanded during slippery eamer, check reins unfastened when horses aro standing, and In all ways 10 live up to tho motto of the society, "We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves." Kx. Some men ofTer as an excuse for their failure to accomplish certain results, or to enjoy certain advant ages, that they "haven't time." The trouble is that so many men try to do several things at once and in the scramble overlook something. Freiiuontly. the Item overlooked Is one of the most Important. The man who makes things happen and achieves great results usually does one thing at a time, closes the transaction, then takes up another iu logical order, and by careful, efficient plunnlng, manages to get everything done on schedule and have timo left.
