ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. JULY 21, I CORRESPONDENCE 2 WEST ST. HELENS SCAPPOOSE Miss Ardath Haggoy spent Mon day in Portland shopping. II. West was doing business in Tortland the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. G. 15. Milloy are In Portland on a few days' pleasure trip. Latest reports from T. A. Clontn ger are to the effect that he remains very low. J. G. Watts and son James at tended Chautauqua at Gladstone on Sunday. Miss Margery Holaday entertained the Sew and Sew Club last Tuesday at her home. Emmet Stevens is building a tank tower and installing a gasolino en gine for a water system for the home use. Burt West and Adolph Adams are on their way to the Colvllle Indian reservation to file for homesteads. Good luck. Miss Neva Boyle and Mrs. M. J. Watts and son Lawrence spent Mon day and Tuesday shopping in the Rose City. One night last week Dr. Hatfield was called to attend Simon Nouiuan, who was taken very ill. Mr. Neujnan is nearly recovered at this writing. The Marine band, composed of children in the Des Moines, Wash., orphan home, will give, an entertain ment at W. & P. hall Friday night. Little Lowell Washburn is suffer ing with a severe cold and is giving her people a good deal of worry as her temperature is running very high. Mr. and Mrs. R. Niblock enter tained the. church choir Monday night. A light lunch was served on the lawn, which was lighted with Japanese lanterns, and a general good time is reported. Mrs. Hoag of Portland, lectured to the Ladies' Aid and friends last Thursday at the church. The sub ject was on home and foreign mis sions and how a young society might grow. Cake and orangeade were served. D. W. Price is making special ef fort to add to the pleasures of others by taking many of his friends to the Chautauqua in his auto. Last Sunday he took Mrs. Crowley and Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Stevens. frank Silvernagle of Chapman camp region, while working for the Johnson & Davis Pole and Piling company as hook tender, was hit by a tree as a pole was being pulled up and his hip was dislocated. Dr. Hat field was called and relieved his suffering. Miss Gypsy Johnston, with some Medford friends who had been visit ing the Jo li nst on family, started to motor to Medford to visit her sister. Cards received tell of several mis haps along the line. Last report at Cottage Grove informs us of hotel bills. Well we hope that the auto is repaired and that the parties have reached their destination in safety. Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Thatcher, who have lately located in Portland, motored down Tuesday afternoon to visit with the Frank L. Smiths. They brought with them their five hand some daughters, Miss Ellacita, Miss Josephine, Miss Mildred, Miss Alexia and Baby Mary Ellen. Mrs. That cher is the daughter of the late Gov ernor Hauser of Montana. Mr. and Mrs. J. Dell and Mr. and Mrs. Win. Goodman spent Thursday and Friday sightseeing in Portland. Mrs. Dr. 11. Cole and Mrs. Dr. Fuller celebrated the anniversary of their birth on Wednesday. These young folks are quite shy about tell ing the number of anniversaries that they have had. If you wish to know, the correspondent suggests that you bribe them by taking them to the picture show or ice cream parlor. Tho good ladles were born on the samo day, month and year, heuce their union celebration. Their many friends wish them long life and con tinued happiness nnd prosperity. Messrs. C. and F. White and their families motored to Portlnnd Mon day, returning in the evening. G. W. Perry was called to Port land on Sunday because of the seri ous illness of his brother, Frank C, who passed away at the St. Vlucent hospital on Monday. The remains were shipped to St. Helens, where the funeral services wore held in the Houlton M. E. church. Interment was in Germany Hill cemetery. Mr. Perry was born November 5, 1S44, and was 71 years, 8 months and 12 days old at the time of his death. It ; bids fair to be a year of abundance. j Mr. and Mrs. Callahan and Mr. and Mrs. Murphy and family of Ya colt, Wash., have come to make their homes in Deer Island. Mr. Callahan is the locomotive engineer for the ! new logging company here. Mr. Murphy is the brother of the super intendent of this company. j Two of our respected citizens, M. W. iirowu and Jack Appleton, were seen on their way to the metropolis : on Tuesday, seemingly in search of medical aid, as one had his nand j bandaged and the other was llmp- j ing. Mr. and Mrs. George Hammer are : being felicitated upon the arrival of a son born Saturday, July 15. For the pleasure of Mrs. Toomey, who returned to lier home in Oak land, Cal., last Saturday, Mrs. B. J. Keelan entertained on Thursday evening with a lawn party to which twenty-five guests were bidden. A most enjoyable evening w;mj spent in games and music. Dainty refresh ments were served at a late hour, after which the merry throng broke up. Wm. Francis and two little daugh ters, left last week for Nebraska. Mr. Lewis and son of St. Helens, are preparing for a big blast close to the residence of A. Adams. It is expected that this bloat will loosen about 4,000 cubic yards of rock, which will supply about 5,000 cubic yards of crushed rock. Tho St. Helens Logging t'amu re- sumed work on Monday of this week with a full force of men. Tim , , has been closed for two weeks. A roclpo for making home made loganberry wine without using alco hol has been asked for. By follow ing these directions an excellent wine can be mado out of ripe loganber ries: Tako good rlpo logiin berries, put Into clean cask or other vessel, let stand for twenty-four hours. Now' take a clean rubber hoso and siphon It off Into another vessel. Let stand until settled again, draw off ugaln as before with hoso or spigot, leav ing a settling In the bottom of tho vessel. Wood or stone vessel should be used. Add one quart of water to each gallon of Juice. Then add three pounds of sugar to every gallon und stir It until sugar Is thoroughly dis solved. Now put Into a good clean keg and place In collar, in a rattier warm place, leaving bung out, but keep covered with gauze to keep in sects and dirt out. Keep keg full with Juice kept In another vessel until it is through working. Hung up tight until spring. Bure to place the keg whoro you will not have to lift It as this would affect the color.
