W. BLAKESLEY, Assessor of Columbia County, Oregon. FARM ANIMALS REPORT The farm animals' report Was re , assuring. In spite of the large ex ports, both of beef and hog products, the report showed no depletion of farm supplies except of sheep. Farm ers are not killing off their stock to the depletion point. Our rulers worry too much unnecessarily about the farmers' apparent lack of good bus iness sonse; to them he Is still Hay seod, though they don't venture to say it aloud any more. Livestock production is a business matter; and --wo suppose the farmer Is quite as able to adjust his production of grain or stock to the probable future in como from his own Initiative as the college men at Washington are able to do that for him. The report shows that the farmers have faith In the future livestock and still recognize the fact that grain and hay that walk off the farm pay more than that haul ed off. Furthermore, in ' spite of food faddists and high prices, the American who is ai work every day In the year can afford to eat meat as his father did, and he does It. That fact will .make It safe always for a farmer to grow beeves and hogs. The sheep industry, unfortunatoly, hav ing ceased to bo a range proposition, has become too much the victim of politics and tariff agitation for farm ers to approach It as they do other livestock. Yet mutton and lamb meat is probably more profitable tfian wool; bo if farmers would forget all about the price of wool and grow sheep for moat, taking tho wool in come as a bonus, they would probably make more money than by fooling with wool to tho neglect of meat. Price Current. RAILWAY COURTESY Travelers who aro accustomed to holng hold up at every cornor and who have found it necessary wlion enroute to either carry a lunch or patronize the necessarily high-priced diners, have boon agreeably surprised j with the lunch Bcrvlce adopted by tho! Southern Pacific some time ago. The male brunetto who formorly announced that dinner was ready In the diner, and who did It in a tone to indicate that you could either fol low him or starve, now announces tho meals us usual hut also loaves a slip announcing Hint tor tho accom modation of passengers lunch boxes will bo delivered by the waiter upon request, at the modest price of 30 cents. Tho slip gives the contents of each box, tho lint Including items sufllclent for a good sized lunch. With tho lunch boxes a family mny be fed nt the price It formorly cost ono. Tliero Is no particular reason why tho Southern Pacific should adopt this luii'Ch box.servlce, othor than tho accommodation of its patrons. Such ' tntorast In tho welfare and comfort of travelers Is such a contrast to the pulillc-ho-dnnined spirit of tho rail roads of a few years ugo as to be worthy of special noilco.
