4 ST. HELENS MIST, FRIDAY, JANUARY 21. 1916 r rnDDrcnnvnriurr SCAPPOOSE All the boys In town arcs building sleds these days. The trucks are still tied up on ac count of the snow. Mr. and Mrs. H. Niblock entertain ed Rev. Johnston and family ou Sun dny last. Mrs. J. S. Maun of Llnnton, spent Tuesday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Crowley. Prank L. Smith shipped another carload of cattle Monday to be used In the Portland market. Everybody seemed to be casting suspicious glances at everybody they met Tuesday. There was a detective in town. Mrs. L. M. Duncan is quite sick at present, but with daughter Maude as nurse, we believe she will soon be up again. A man by the name of James Har rison died at Pisgah Heights after a short illness. Paralysis was the cause of death. Mrs. Dr. Hatfield has been sick for several days. Mrs. Chas. Barker is taking Mrs. Hatfield's place in the school room. On account of sickness in the Englert family, Mrs. Alice Englert Wayburne came from The Dalles to assist in nursing. Miss Athline Tolly closed her school at Fernhill in Beaver valley, until the weather conditions are more favorable. We learned that Tom Roy has re turned from California and is now employed at Al Harrison's store in St. Helens. Wood is in great demand these days anyone having several hun dred cords report to agent Niblock, who will furnish buyers. Miss Elluice Butler has returned from Eugene, but expects to go back in a few weeks. Mrs. M. J. Butler has been having her turn doctoring the grip. Jesse Hammer of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Baldwin and Mr. and Mrs. Robinson of Forest Grove, came to attend the funeral of Mrs. Phoebe L. Whitney, last Saturday. Wm. Howell and family are mov ing back to Scappoose from Eastern Oregon. Snow is reported five feet deep there putting a stop to logg ing. A mournful dog tale. Some one Bhot Mr. Crowley's pet dog. The train killed a dog belonging to James Tabor and another canine belonging to Rob McKay. We can't blame the train, but anyone who is low enough to deliberately shoot a pet dog with out a good cause is a low character. On acount of the boat Hoo Hoo being tied up, awaiting the clearing of the river of ice, rfarry Smith and wife are spending a few days with Mrs. Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glllett. FROM NEW YORK Pomona, N. Y., Jan. 3, 1916. Editor Mist: I enclose $1.00 to extend my subscription. I do not know when it was due or how much per annum. You are giving an in teresting paper, and am glad to know St. Helens is doing so well. We have had several years of fear ful times since the no-tariff crew have the control. If they are not cleaned out next trip, Europe will deluge this country with cheap goods and what gold we have accumulated through this war will leave in three years, factories go out of business and labor on the street as it was after this crew came in power. I am always Interested in the ship ping reports each week from St. Hel ens. Yours truly, O. N. HAUPTMAN. MONEY TO INVEST Talk or write to me. I have a party with $100,000 cash to invest In tim ber at once. Wm. M. Ross. PURE MILK AND CREAM Furnished Daily by ST. HELENS DAIRY S. N. CADE, Proprietor ST. HELENS, OREGON. Phone 107-6. SUNDAY CLOSING LAW TO SLEEP The Sunday closing law seems to be up in the air. In Multnomah county the matter has been appealed and Judge Gantenbein hag granted an Injunction. The officials of Columbia county have accepted Judge Gantenbeln's decision and will not enforce the law. As the matter will be decided at the next election the enforcement of the law will be permitted to rest. As it hag been asleep for some fifty years it is thought little harm will ensue to permit it to sleep a few months longer.
