Morgus was in Portland Mon day and Tuesday, purchasing new goods. Edgar Emerson, who was sent to the penitentiary from this county in November, 1913, on the charge ot forgery, has been granted a parole. Mrs. Rosenthal and Miss Rosen thal deserve special mention tor raising 312.50 to the Mut fund. They made and donated a sofa pillow and sold numbers for for Its Bale. Mr. Rosasco, manager ot the Co lumbia River Cannery and Produce Co., presented the editor of the Mist with samples ot the product of the home cannery. We found them much superior to the goods shipped In from other, states. . His assortment ot pickles, sour, dill and mustard, are first class. His line of pickles will soon be placed on sale In the local market and we do not hesitate to reoommond them above any other brand. Home products should be first, anyhow. From the quarterly bulletin of the Oregon State Board ot Health, we find the following vital statistics for Columbia county: births for July, 9 boys and 9 girls; deaths 3. For August, births, 8 boys and 6 girls; deaths 2. For September, births, 11 boys and 7 girls; deaths, 8. Max Wilson celebrated his thir teenth birthday by giving a party, Dec. 3. The eighth grade presented htm with a beautiful scarf pin. Games were played and refreshments were served at a late hour, consist ing of cake, aandwiches, pickles can dy and nuts. The guests will re member It as one of the most pleas ant parties. Those present were Mabel Davies, Constance Adams, Stella Barnes, Nellie Mackey, Mae Pierce,1 June Moorhead, Emll Hed strom, Walter Smith, Wilbur Lar rabee, Roy Mackey, Walter Gage and Max Wilson. - COLUMBIA COUNTY SCHOOL NOTES Miss Lucile Clark ot District No. 55, on the upper Nehalem, la serving hot lunch at noon. Many othei schools have the necessary equip ment and soon will be serving hot lunch. : Many schools are giving a Christ mas program on the evening ot De cember 23. A. B. Lake ot District No. 21, has been donated ten gal lons of Ice cream to start sweetening his pupils for the holiday season. It will be served as refreshments at their program on December 23. Several schools are preparing to standardize soon. Miss Mary Mc Gregor of Beaver Homes School, Dis trict No. 9, just Informs us that her enterprising school board has order ed', play apparatus, - pictures, and drinking fountain, and expect to standardize before Christmas. St. Helens and Scappoose will ask for their plates soon. Those schools which became standard last year must keep up their requirements or lose their plates. : The County Superintendent will go to Salem December 20, as a member of the State Examining Board, and will be gone about wo weeks. St. Helens reports twelve students taking the Teachers. Training Course; Clatskanle has three taking this course; several ot these students Will write for .exemptions at the coming teachers' examinations.' St. Helens schools will close December 24, tor the holiday season, and will reopen January. 3, 1916.. Most of the schools of the county will do likewise.. ..... . " Play sheds and play apparatus are sadly needed .In many places. The cost Is little and the" benefits large. Scappoose and Yankton are erecting, play sheds at prosent. ' The enrollment ot the four stand ard High Schools are as follows: Scappoose, 43; St Helens, 68; Clats kanle, 67; Rainier, 48. ' District No. 86, Neer City, Miss Florence Taylor, teacher. Attend ance so far this year 98 per cent and only two cases ot tardiness, Decem ber 6, 18 present, none absent. Eigh teen boosters are enrolled, all boost ing for Neer City's best school,' and for the Immediate procuring of play apparatus. ' ' ' District No. 20, Anna Ketel, prin cipal; Mrs. E. E. Mallaber, assistant; good school, good teachers, good board, one-half mile good walk, good play shed, and a standard school. Have an organized literary society. A pew clock and a new bookcase have just arrived. , The superintendent wishes that the teachers would see that, tbe library books are returned, and that they receive proper care.
