LOCAL HAPPENINGS AND DOINGS Yourself and Others Miss Lucille Slade spent Wednes day in Portland. Born; On October 5th to Dr. and Mrs. Tucker, a son. James MucVle of Portland was a St. Helens Tisitor today. Mr. Harley Turner visited with his parents in Gresham during the week Mrs. L. J. Van Orshoven Tisited friends at Mayger during the week. Frank Miles of Portland was a business Tisitor in St. Helens Wed nesday. Mrs. Armstead was quite ill for a few days last week but is now much Improved. Mrs. Willard Jones of Portland visited with Mrs. Zipperer during the week, in St. Helens. Feter Felton attended the funenl of the late Warren Quick at Dallas. Oregon on Wednesday. A. L. Stone and Walter Williams returned today from a business trip to Carlton, Washington. Miss Peterson of Portland was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Southard in St. Helens over Sunday. Dr. and Mrs. Peel motored to Portland Wednesday and spent the day visiting relatives and friends. Mrs. Atkins and daughter of Rain ier spent last Sunday visiting at the home of S. R. Sonneland In St. Hel ens. L- R. Rutherford has installed steam heat in his building occupied by Xoahs Ark, Von Gray and Mas on's confectionery. Mrs. Todd and Mrs. Stout re turned last Saturday from Fossil, Ore., where the accompanied the body of the late T. W. Todd for buri L Mrs. Partridge left St. Helens Thursday morning for Seattlew here she will visit until about Christmas time when she will return to this city. Mrs. Edwin Ross entertained Wed nesday afternoon at her home in honor of Mrs. Patridge who left St. Helens this week for Seattle. Six teen ladies were present daring the afternoon. Rev. F. N". Sandifer arrived in St. Helens last Saturday and took op his work as Pastor of the M. E. Church. Eev. Mr. Sandifer and his family have taken the residence formerly occupied by Rev. Luther on the cor ner cf Columbia and St. Helens Streets. Dr. L. G. Ross atended the Srst game of the world's series of base, ball at Portland to day. The game was played in Philadelphia but the Dr. was one of several thousand In terested fans who stood in front of the score board at the Telegram oce in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Quick and their daughters Alice and Anna, returned yesteriay from Dallas, Oregon, where they went to attend the funeral of J. Warren Quick which was held on Wednesday afternoon, the Masonic Lodge of that city having charge of the ceremonies. Mrs. E. A. Rotger entertained Wednesday afternoon la honor of Mrs. H. P. Watkins, the occasion beiig the 63th birthday of the honor ed guest. A cumber of friends spent the afternoon at the home of Mrs. Rotger very pleasantly. Dainty re freshments were served. Mrs. Aleshire and Mr. and Mr. Catena of Ohio are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Southard ia St. Helens this week These peo ple are from the former home of Mr. and Mrs. Southard and they are mak ing a tour of the Pacific Coast. After several days spent in St. Helens these Eastern people have decided to locate here. Chas Cooper has opened a fish and oyster market in the Wellington building next to Peterson's store where he will have for sale fresh fish, oysters, crabs, clams as well as salt and dried fish. The place has been fitted up very conriently with blocks and ice pans, refrigerator etc and everything is strictly clean and sanitary. Look at his ad In this issue of the Mist. Last Monday Deputy Sheriff Lake resigned his position and Sheriff John appointed In his place Martin White to serve nntil the new Sheriff takes office on Jan. 1st next year. Mr. Lake had received the nomin ation for Sheriff on the Progressive ticket and decided to accept the nomination and make the run for the office Mr. White was worn into office last Monday. Gamble, a well known tia berman of Portland, was attending to business matters in St. Helens one day this week. The first game of the World's seri es of base ball between Philadelphia and Poston was played today result-j ing in a victory for Boston by thei score of 7 to 1. i Mr. G. W. Roberts. Francis Jakubec. the little child of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Jakubec of Scap poose died at the family tome oa October 5th. Little Francis was two years old. Funeral services were conducted by Father Fisher In the Catholic Church at Scappcose and in terment was in the Catholic Ceme tery near Scappoose. On last Saturday Miss Clara Brought of St. Helens and Mr. Ralph Wood of Portland were married at Vancouver, Wash. The bride Is the daughter of Mrs. Eroaght of this city who is well known to the resi dents here while the young groom is employed oa one of the boats plying between St. Helens and PortHnd. CLATSKANIE FARMER DIES SUDDENLY Frank A. Swanrren, a farmer of the Clatskanie neighborhood, vas found dead in his bed at the Grand Central Hotel in Clatskanie one day this week. The man had been work ing on the road near Rainier and contracted a seTere cold. Returning to Clatskanie he went to the hotel and secured a room and retired. Mr. Prescott and his family left St. Helens about a year ago for Florida and shortly after arriving there be was stricken with tubercul osis. About a month before his death the family moved, to Texas but the change was of no avail and on the 23rd of last month he passed away.
