I " A Lively Track Meet A lively track meet was held lust Saturday on the St. Helens school field, in which the schools of South Columbia County were participants. High school, grammar and inter mediate events were run off. Con testants were present from Gob'e, Tret. holm, Yankton, Columbia Citv. West St. Helens and Scappoose. The hitfh scores were made by St. Helens and Scappoose, St. Helens winning the high school events and Scappoose the grammar events In vividual honors were won by Walt er Zysett, St. Helens high school Score by Schools. St. Helens hirh school, 42 gram mar, 32 1-2, intermediate, 14. scappoose high school, 3", gram mar, 39. West st. Helens, grammar. 4 1-2, intermediate. 27. Trenholm, grammar, 1, interme diate, 3. Goble, intermediate, 1. Dale Terry, of the St. Helens schools, whose points could not bo counted because of his having left school, made quite a score fur his school himself. In the Shot-put he made an exhibition throw of 4 1 feet, which is two feet farther than the record for high schools. The otliciuls of the meet were: supt. Wilkerson, L. II. Uutherford. Prof. Hrehaut, judges; Mr. Porno- roy and A. Owen, clerks of course; with f nninta Wntta Priv Renn-' poose high with 19 points, and ! Attorney Metsker and Kev. Meyer, Frank Robertson, St. Helens high with 12 points. In the grammar events Scappoose furnished the I starters, and Attorney H. . White, manage'. highest individual point-getter in Hugh Adams, who made five firsts, two seconds and a third, or 32 points in all. For St. Helens gram mar, Dewey smith made 14 points and Jim Adams 12 1-2 points. scappoose came into town with a merry crowd of fifty rooters, who were the merrier when their team won the ball game over st. Weigle, 2nd, J. Adams, 3rd. The 220 relay race was won by St. Helens high school and the Gram mar by Scappoose. Messers Johnson, Lee and Moan spent the former part of the week fishing salmon on the Columbia, but as the so called "Fisherman' Luck escaped them, they were obliged to cease their sport. Mr. J. J. Havlik spent the greater part of last week in Port land, transacting bussness. Rev. Dr. Urban Fischer moved into his new tiome in South J-cap- poose, the first of the week. The public Highway question seems to be the chief topic the day. It effects the politicans especially. Miss Lillian Havlik and Mr. Jus Fischer visited at the home of the home of the latter last Tuesday evening. The Dutch Canyon Rase Rail tean were defeated last Sunday by the Scappoose High. Score being 18 to 0. Hurrah! One more family added to our vicinity. Mr Stasny and family, who. Some years ago, not being content, left Scappoose and journied to various parts of Kurope and also United States. About two weeks ago he arrived here and said No place like Scappoose Valley, and I shall make my future home here." WARREN To late for last week Mrs. Kate Ferry and Mrs. Ruth Fox and little son, Morris were guests of Mr. and Mrs. N. F. Bak er Tuesday. Strawberries are beginning to ripen. There are several large patches in this vicinity, N. F. Bak er's being worthy of special men tion. Miss Hulda Sandstedt armed last Saturday from Kansas and is visiting at the home of her rela tives, A. L. Larson and family. Mr. He llund has purchased a piece of land of C. J. Anderson and is clearing a part of it and prepar ing to build a new house. Mr. Grace Quick of Portland wa a guest at the home of her sis ter, Mrs. 0. A. Krickson WcdiieH day.
