Tathema, born at Kureka, ( "alif.. g r a d u a t e d from St. Joseph's Academy in 1 fmllft n ami latrr got considerable college training before enrolling at Rob Slu attended Haconc I'ni veisity in Oklahoma one year ami Huston I'niversity, Huston, .Mass.. for an additional year, taking libera 1 arts courses in both in stances. Of Haconc, the only predomin antly Indian college in the country. Tatheina says: "It's a growing college. It's just a good junior college." Although some may think that Haconc is an all-Indian school, I athema advises that it is not. having a scattering of non Indian students. One reason it has so many Indian students, she states, is that it offers a ureal number of scholarships to In dians. The faculty also, Tathema found, had a number of Indians on it. Courses she took there in cluded Kuglish lit.. Spanish, his troy, and Zoology. Hoston 1". Tathema encount ered considerably larger and "more of a struggle". Tathema finds that all this training has helped her no end at business school as well as in "getting around and understand ing people". 1 At Robertson, where she en rolled last September, Tathema has just finished Kuglish I and Husiness Psychology. She has progressed : l(,nN ways in her typing and has the theory part of shorthand finished, ready to start in on the application thereof. 'Tathema feels that she is get ting a lot out of the training and will "gain a better position through it". doing to school from t( I. the students get experience in handling a wide variety of ma chines: tape recorders, adding machines, electric typewriters, bookkeeping machines, mimeo graphs, duplicators, etc. 'They also get some practical work handling of I ice chores. 'There is no time limit to the courses as the stu dents go at their own rate of speed. However. 'Tathema expects to finish this fall. On termination, 'Tathema feels it has its "good qualities and its bad qualities". Some of the good ones: "The people with professions or voca tions ean further themselves in training. Some will be able to set up their own businesses." On the bad side: "It has its backfalls as far as hunting and fishing rights, influx of white population, taxation, and treat ment of Indians after they've spent their money." Tathema predicts a "tremen dous change as far as the reserva tion is concerned economically and population-wise". She feels that the reappraisal has been "more or less political". "There isn't a downtrend in timber prices. 'They're up in Cal ifornia. Xcuherger himself said the taxpayers would save money. It's more political talk than any thing." Tathema sees the proposed loans as a good idea because "they may put it (termination) off again as in the past. It may go on tor years. 'Tathema doesn't agree with the 4 restriction: "We're all Klam ath Indians when you get right down to it or we wouldn't be on the mil." She also takes issue with the private trusts, citing her 20-year-old brother who "can't get a monthly allow nace". ."He could use a small allow ance each month without asking the bank. He was in the service but still doesn't have the right to a monthly allowance." On the Klamath Kducation Program: "It's helped tremen dously because Indian families can't afford to send their children to school on the money they make. We need education to face what's coming up before us." Seniors Invited To Contact Ed.
