HATCHER DIVIDES TIME BETWEEN SAW
HORSES AND RODEO HORSES
"It's a damned good course,"
states Harold Hatcher, referring
to the carpentry course he is now
taking at (VIM. under the Klam
ath Education Program.
Harold was horn and raised in
the (hil(Muin area, attended
(hilopun schools, and started his
training at O.T.I, in September,
The course is two school years
in length, and Harold is now on
the second lap. In his first year
of training, he took courses in
blueprint reading and drafting in
addition to extensive work in
carpentry, including both lectures
and shop. During current
school ear Harold is taking more
courses of the same type, with
the work being along more ad
Some of -the specific matters
studied include w all sheathing and
insulation, steel square, hardware,
roof framing, estimating costs
and materials, safety, use and care
of tools, scaffolding and staging,
concictc form construction, and

a do;; house, and several tables.
Since students in the course pay
for the lumber they use, the ar
ticles they build become their
property. Harold has thereby
accumulated mute a bit of useful
furniture aiound the house.
1 larold's class also sj.mt consider
able time last year helping to
build a new office in the automo
tive shop at ( VIM.
To avoid keeping his nose too
close 1 1 the tape measure and
chalk line, Harold has participated
in divcrsionarv activity in the
form of rodeos. During the past
school year, he took part in rodeos
in Oregon, Washington, and Cali
fornia as a member of the O.T.I,
rodeo team, bringing home prizes
on several occasions. He plans to
follow the circuit with the team
again this year.
. Harold states that he is not
certain as to what he will do after
he completes the course next
June. He is thinking of getting a
job in the carpentry field or of
going ()" i cabinctmaking, which
is a related course offered at
O.T.I, covering such items of in
struction as joinery, bench work,
saw filing, interior and exterior
trim, and painting and finishing.
The Education Office held an
impromptu "trick or treat" party
last Halloween Night for the
children of the Chilojuin area.
An estimated 100 to 150 young
sters passed through on their
animal rounds and collected their
share of the lout, which included
candy, apples, cider and dough
nuts, (lames were conducted and
prizes given to the winners.
Everybody seemed to enjoy
themselves so much, including our
staff, that a similar party is plan
ned for next Halloween, provided
we recover in time.
A huge truck lumbered up
alongside a sports car stalled at
the roadside and the trucker
called out, "Whazzanuttcr, you
need a new flint ?"
