The telephone company has run a special wire to Athletic Field and will get the result of the game as rapidly as points are made. W. L. Sharp, record, keeper of Cor vallis Tent No. 11 K. O. T.M., received yesterday from the Grand Tent at Detroit, Mich., a draft for $3000, the amount of insurance carried in that order by the late S. L. Kline. The sum was at once paid over to the estate. This lodge thinks this is also rather quick and satisfactory work. - At a meeting of the Ladies' Aid, of the Congregational church, held yes terday at the home of Mrs. E. R. Hol lister, work for the coming three months was outlined. Some time dur ing October a social will be held at the home of Mrs. F. Berchtold; in No vember this church's annual "Harvest Home" will be given; and on Decem ber 10th and 11th .the annual Christ mas sale will be held. The ladies had a very delightful time yesterday laying their plans. . . A gentleman stepped into this office the other day with a sprig of something or other for which he desired the cor rectrname. The writer of this look it for "greens," another insisted that it was kale, the new cow food, while a third knowing person declared that it was a tfurbank production, one of his new cacte. It finally developed that this sprig was from a Canadian thistle, one of the most undesirable weeds that could possibly find a foothold in this section. The gentleman who brought it said he found it on Dr. J. R. N. Bell's main street business lot. There can be no question now about Dr. Bell having to burn everything on his lot. The people in the South ' end of v the city are getting very indignant at the continued tramping of their sidewalk parkings and yards by sheep and cattle. A band of- sheep driven y around the south end streets yesterday spoiled several lawns, and was particularly hard on the Vance Taylor parkings. He had recently laid cement walk and curb about, his property and made wide lawns there, having planted clover, which is now up or rather, it was up; it is now down, far below: the surface of the ground where the sheep tramped it. The Council should hasten to pass an ordinance requiring live stock to be confined to certain streets and driven there, only with sufficient escort to keep them from walks ;and yards. A double quartette, nameless as yet, was organized in this city Tuesday night. The members are Messrs. B. W. Johnson and Arthur Boquet, bassos; W. S. Brown and N. R. Moore.baritones; E. D. Ressler and C. E. Bradley second tenors; John Fulton and Dr. Hanford, first tenors. The organization was perfected by depositing something less than $100 in the treasury, election of Mr. - J ohnson as president and Mr. Bradley as secretary-treasurer. W. F. Gaskins will wield the baton over this aggregation and during the winter endeavor to develop a singing bunch with which he would not hesitate to invade Chicago or Monroe. This quarette really fancies it is going to do something worth while and already has talked of the possibility of giving a concert in the late Spring with members of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Co., of New York, to assist.
