Oregon ventures to slow dynamic Leinart, Bush duo The potent Trojan offense will test Oregon's defense by both air and ground BY CLAYTON JONES SPORTS EDITOR During the course of a season, a football team has few chances to thrust itself into the national spotlight and make headlines across the country. Oregon has that opportunity this weekend. The 24th-ranked Ducks (3-0) wel come top-ranked, two-time defend ing national champion USC (2-0) into Autzen Stadium Saturday at 4 p.m. in one of the most anticipated Duck games in recent history. “You always want to perform and compete against the best,” Oregon cornerback Justin Phinisee said. “They are number one, but they do have to come through us.” The TYojans, who are riding a na tion-high 24-game winning streak, face the Ducks for the first time since Carson Palmer and Mike Williams beat Oregon at Autzen 44 33 in 2002. Since then, the Trojans have had a remarkable run, going 32-1 and adding two national cham pionships to the heralded program. The Ducks, on the other hand, have gone 17-15 and had their first losing season in a decade last year. But while Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti said this game will give the Ducks an opportunity to gain some respect they lost last season, the game is vital to them because it’s the Pacific-10 Confer ence opener. “We are playing the number one team and the two-time defending r use quarterback Matt Leinart is the defending Heisman Trophy winner and ranks fifth in the country in total offense (360.0 average). Leinart has a seven-to-one touchdown interception ratio this season. Courtesy national champion,” Bellotti said. “More importantly for us, it is our first Pac-10 game. It gives an oppor tunity to set the tone in the league. Postseason play is determined by league play, so league play takes on that much more importance.” TVojan head coach Pete Carroll ex pects his team’s first conference game to be a challenge, especially coming to Autzen Stadium. “We jump right into the schedule in the conference against undefeat ed Oregon, all pumped up,” the fifth-year coach said. “I am sure their place is going to be nuts. It is a tremendous place to play. ... We want to get on the road, get a win and get back (to Los Angeles).” The overwhelmingly favored Tro jans (21 points as of Wednesday) will be guided by last season’s Heis man winner Matt Leinart.
