Lacrosse: Lumberjax could create a dynasty early on Continued from page 5 “The core players we’ve ac quired have now had a full season to play with each other and will only improve,” Keenan said. Do not count Portland out of possibly creating an early dynasty. The Toronto Rock, a fellow NLL expansion team, has already ac complished this feat winning championships in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003. Expect lacrosse to become even more popular in Eugene, where Oregon’s women’s lacrosse team, fresh off of its first season, has giv en the sport a shot in the arm. For the Lumberjax and lacrosse in general, there is plenty of room to grow in Oregon. 10SO9ZZ0 / tasn/fi special one FREE plant with purchase of a green ribbon foliage plant Eugene's Flower Home The University Florist 610 E. 13th at Patterson • 485-3655 Offer expires July 30,2005 • One coupon per customer J 0192851 iddlefielD ' Golf Course: 942-8730 484-1927 STUDENT SPECIAL GOLF 9 HOLES $12 Students Only. Eugene starting pitcher Brent Carter worked out of each jam, in cluding inducing Quinones to strike out to end the fifth inning. Carter al lowed one run on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings, while strik ing out six. “I was able to locate the ball in and out,” Carter said. “They seemed to be kind of struggling with my change-up.” The Emeralds answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Following a strikeout by Will Ven able to start the inning, Rivera knocked a bunt single over the first baseman’s head and reached sec ond base during Sansoe’s ground out. Davidson hit an RBI single to tie the game. “Those two-out RBIs and two-out base hits are hard to come by,” Howell said. “You are hitting on a defensive position.” Carter earned a no-decision after leaving the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning. “There will be those games where you get no support and ones where you get 10 runs in the first three innings, Carter said, ihe main thing is try to do your job. It all evens out in the long run.” Eugene relief pitchers allowed only two hits in three and two-thirds innings pitched and allowed only one Hawk to reach second base. “They were throwing strikes, at tacking the hitters,” Howell said. The Emeralds finish a three-game series tonight at Everett. Davidson accounted for both Eugene runs that were batted in. Basketball: Judge Kent on facts, personal experience Continued from page 6 potentially enter five players into the draft. Consider this- any guaranteed lottery pick with bad knees won’t last longer than a season at any universi ty, so why should Kent worry about Love anyways? Like last year, we will be rebuilding in 2006, so why would we want a freshman phenom that will cut the check the following off-season? The Eugene family is ecstatic that the temporary drought in Oregon athletics is water under the bridge. These young Ducks are explosive, poised and still learning. And it’s scary. With so many positives re garding Kent’s on-court family, why try and pick at a blemish in his per sonal life? I ask everyone to judge Ernie Kent based on facts, statistic sand by personal experience. Shake his hand and try and tell me he’s the wrong guy on the bench. Myself, Duck alumni, and Univer sity supporters who feel like they are a piece of the Eugene family want editorials like Canzano’s to stop. P.S. Damon Stoudamire was the reason I was able to play my senior season of high school baseball, be cause he donated $200,000 to the Portland Interscholastic League. It’s sad that a dense marijuana cloud will forever rain on his image in Portland. I just hope Kent and Stoudamire both know that real fans wish them the best in their futures.
