Graduating seniors from 39 University departments will
receive diplomas at the main commencement ceremony
BY MARGARET MCGLADREY
DAILY EMERALD FREELANCE REPORTER
University graduates will don
caps and gowns to receive
their degrees at the Class of
2005 commencement ceremony Sat
urday. The main ceremony will take
place 12:30 p.m. at McArthur Court.
Rachel Johnson, director of Fami
ly Programs and Commencement,
said graduates should plan to line
up south of the covered tennis
courts near Mac Court at noon.
Seating is first come, first served,
and doors will open for attendees at
10:30 a.m. Johnson advises family
and friends to arrive early to find
parking and seats.
“All graduating students should
also be sure to register for graduation
on DuckWeb and meet with their
adviser to review their degree au
dits,” she said.
Graduates from 39 departments
will be represented at the main
ceremony. The Office of the Registrar
anticipates that the Class of
2005 will be the same size or larger
than the Class of 2004. With in
creased enrollment at the Universi
ty during the past five years, gradu
ation classes have grown to include
more than 4,000 degree recipients.
Departmental ceremonies are
scheduled for Saturday morning and
the afternoon following the main
event at Mac Court. Graduates will be
able to attend both departmental and
University ceremonies.
Senior Elizabeth Tveit is looking
forward to receiving her degree in
magazine journalism with a minor
in women and gender studies. She
said both the University and the
School of Journalism and Communi
cation commencement ceremonies
will be meaningful.
“The School of Journalism cere
mony is more personal, with the pro
fessors I’ve had and the friends I’ve
taken classes with,” Tveit said. “The
bigger ceremony recognizes the Uni
versity at large, beyond just my indi
vidual course of study. ”
Lorraine Davis, vice president of
Academic Affairs, will speak before
degrees are presented at Mac Court.
The main ceremony will include
degree awards to individual Ph.D.
recipients as well as group awards
to recipients of master’s and
bachelor’s degrees. The University
also will award honors to
distinguished alumni and faculty.
Individual student honors will be
presented at departmental com
mencement ceremonies.
Seniors were mailed invitations a
few weeks ago, but they can still at
tend without them. Denise Beban,
assistant director of alumni relations,
encouraged all seniors to bring their
invitations to make check-in quick
and easy.
