The CLASS of 2005 unites Graduating seniors from 39 University departments will receive diplomas at the main commencement ceremony BY MARGARET MCGLADREY DAILY EMERALD FREELANCE REPORTER University graduates will don caps and gowns to receive their degrees at the Class of 2005 commencement ceremony Sat urday. The main ceremony will take place 12:30 p.m. at McArthur Court. Rachel Johnson, director of Fami ly Programs and Commencement, said graduates should plan to line up south of the covered tennis courts near Mac Court at noon. Seating is first come, first served, and doors will open for attendees at 10:30 a.m. Johnson advises family and friends to arrive early to find parking and seats. “All graduating students should also be sure to register for graduation on DuckWeb and meet with their adviser to review their degree au dits,” she said. Graduates from 39 departments will be represented at the main ceremony. The Office of the Registrar anticipates that the Class of 2005 will be the same size or larger than the Class of 2004. With in creased enrollment at the Universi ty during the past five years, gradu ation classes have grown to include more than 4,000 degree recipients. Departmental ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday morning and the afternoon following the main event at Mac Court. Graduates will be able to attend both departmental and University ceremonies. Senior Elizabeth Tveit is looking forward to receiving her degree in magazine journalism with a minor in women and gender studies. She said both the University and the School of Journalism and Communi cation commencement ceremonies will be meaningful. “The School of Journalism cere mony is more personal, with the pro fessors I’ve had and the friends I’ve taken classes with,” Tveit said. “The bigger ceremony recognizes the Uni versity at large, beyond just my indi vidual course of study. ” Lorraine Davis, vice president of Academic Affairs, will speak before degrees are presented at Mac Court. The main ceremony will include degree awards to individual Ph.D. recipients as well as group awards to recipients of master’s and bachelor’s degrees. The University also will award honors to distinguished alumni and faculty. Individual student honors will be presented at departmental com mencement ceremonies. Seniors were mailed invitations a few weeks ago, but they can still at tend without them. Denise Beban, assistant director of alumni relations, encouraged all seniors to bring their invitations to make check-in quick and easy.
