Eugenes first microbrewery after prohibition is still living ‘High’ life The pub attracts a mellow crowd with its lack of big screens and abundance ofMcMenamins draft ales BY JOSH LINTEREUR PULSE REPORTER Eugene had been without a micro brewery since prohibition until McMe namins opened High Street Brewery and Cafe in 1988. And while other brew pubs have come and gone since the mid-1990s microbrew craze, High Street Brewery still stands thanks to its savory brews and comfortable atmosphere, which remains a sublime alternative to the hard-drinking, male-dominated sports bars that dotthe city. The pub sits inside an early 1900s house at 1243 High Street From the curtains shading the antique windows right down to the vintage rugs adorning the worn wood floor, the furnishings add a rustic touch to the already well preserved structure, and the resulting ambiance is categorically laid-back. "People come in here to talk," said bartender Dan Schmid. And the conversation flows freely thanks to the absence of televisions, though a pocket-sized screen does hang near the bar as a joke. Patrons patiently wait for the cov eted booths that line the interior of the establishment, while a long table sits before a fireplace in the main room for larger groups. And when warm weather arrives, Eugeneans flock to the pub's backyard beer garden. With its thick tree canopy and ample seating, the outdoor area is easily one of the best patios in Eugene. In 2004, the brewery served up more than 248,000 pints of beer to the thirsty throngs, which Schmid said include a sizable slice of students along with an array of "mellow-hipster-Eugeneans." "We get a real Eugene-townie crowd," he said. "And it spans the ages." Patrons sample from a permanent collection of core McMenamins draft ales, such as the Hammerhead cop per-colored ale and the Terminator Stout The pub also features revolving concoctions of cask-conditioned ales and seasonal brews crafted on site. Pints are $3.60 and pitchers cost $9.65, and the brewery offers wine from the McMenamins' Edgefield winery for around $5 a glass or $19 to $27 per bottle. During the pub's two happy hours, which run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight, it offers $8.50 pitchers, $3 pints, $3 wells and 50 cents off all wine. The pub serves up an affordable se lection of appetizers and snacks, in cluding a delicious hummus piate and the less healthy but equally tasty bas ket of tater tots. It also offers an extensive selection of burgers and sandwiches along with specialties such asthe McMenamins High Pasta, which contains linguine tossed with fresh spinach, garlic, diced tomatoes and roasted hazelnuts in brown butter with Parmesan cheese. After dinner, patrons can select from the brewery's cheesecakes and addi tional dessert selections made locally by Sweet Life Patisserie.
