* VOTE FOR YOUR * Tuesday, May 10 and Wednesday, May 11 ❖ 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Bookstore Lobby and in the EMU ❖ Bring your current University I.D. Josh Frankel Daniel Rodriguez Jim Terborg Joe Bailey Molly Bedford Mitch Layden Daniel Apoloni FRESHMAN Joe Bailey I will spare you my resume. Like all the candidates for the UOBookstore Board of Directors I am honest and hardworking. I am running for Bookstore Board because I have a clear vision for how the Bookstore should run: The Bookstore offers all students a 1 0% discount on coursebooks. As a member of the Board I will make sure this discount is protected, because the Bookstore has the responsibility to keep coursebooks as affordable as possible. The Bookstore needs to develop an online marketplace where UO students can buy and sell used coursebooks. Right now, the Bookstore loses used textbook customers to giant online corporations. By changing how used books are bought and sold, the Bookstore can gain a larger slice of the market while offering students better deals on used textbooks. The Bookstore employs adults who work to support their families. Our employees deserve living-wage jobs. If Board Members ever want to cut the pay of our hardworking employees, I will propose an alternative: Board members should give up their stipend money before asking employees to give up their grocery money. If you share these goals and priorities, I would be honored to have your vote. Molly Bedford I believe that I am a qualified canadate for the freshman position on the University of Oregon Bookstore Board of Director's because I have a lot of leadership ability, and I am looking to become more involved on campus. I feel like I am a good leader and will be able to represent all types of people. I manage my time well and I am a very responsible person. I am aware of my duties as the freshman position on the Board of Directors and believe that I will fulfill my duties easily and go above and beyond what is expected of me. Please take me into consideration when deciding to vote. Thank you. SOPHOMORE Mitch Layden I hope to be elected to the sophomore position on the University of Oregon Bookstore Board of Directors. If elected I will work for the interests of students and the university. Students are concerned with the increasing costs of course books and I will ensure that those concerns are voiced to the Board and that solutions exist to alleviate these pains. I will work to make sure the prices students pay at the register are the best possible prices and that alternatives to high prices exist. The right student for this position should have committee experience, leadership skills, and an obligation to our school; I believe I hold those attributes. Having served as a Complex Government Co-President, with the Residence Hall Association, as a student representative on the Environmental Issues Committee, and with the University Scholarship Committee, have provided me with the necessary skills for this position. I look forward to serving on the Board. GRADUATE 2-YEAR Daniel Apoloni I want to be elected to the Board of Directors because I believe that my combination of education (second-year law student) and work experience in retail will fit the requirements of the position. A successful Bookstore is an asset to the school community: despite its status as an independent entity, it provides employment to a large number of students. Our Bookstore also does a great job of selling discounted textbooks. Yet, sometimes even these discounted textbooks aren't affordable enough for most students. I want to work with the Bookstore to address this issue on a larger scale. The Bookstore has participated, along with the Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group, in a national campaign aimed at reducing the cost of college textbooks. Did you know that the publishing industry practice of “bundling" or shrinkwrapping textbooks with additional instructional materials such as CD-ROMs and workbooks (which instructors rarely use) is one of the main contributors to the high cost of textbooks? If elected, I will work towards the efficient operation and administration of the Bookstore, and I also hope to dedicate part of my time and efforts to issues that can make education more affordable. Josh Frankel By voting for Josh Frankel in today’s U of O Bookstore Board of Directors election, you make a strong statement that you care about the way the Bookstore is run and you ensure that your voice will be heard. Whether you want the Bookstore to reduce the prices of books, sell a new flavor of gum, or extend its weekend hours; I will be there to represent you. The University of Oregon Bookstore is different than many other college bookstores across the country because it is an independently owned, non-profit business. Self-ownership gives the bookstore the flexibility it needs to provide the best possible products and services for UO students, faculty, and staff. In addition, as a non-profit establishment, the Bookstore charges fair prices for products and is highly proactive in the community. I am running for the graduate student position on the Board of Directors because my values coincide with the way the Bookstore is operated. As a former UO Journalism student, and football player for the Ducks, in addition to my current status as an MBA student, you can rest assure that I will represent you with the utmost integrity. Please consider voting for Josh Frankel! FACULTY Daniel Rodriguez I am Dan Rodriguez the Executive Director of the University of Oregon Alumni Association and I am seeking the Faculty at Large position on the UO Bookstore Board of Directors. As part of our campus community for more than 18 years, I have worked closely with the University of Oregon Bookstore to promote a synergetic relationship with the UOAA. I strongly believe that the independent UO Bookstore’s primary purpose is providing goods and services that are essential and financially beneficial to its core consumer, the students of the University of Oregon and the faculty and staff. The Bookstore should continue to explore and provide students with meaningful programs such as “buyback online" and “buyback alert". Our Bookstore is a leader in keeping textbook prices among the lowest in the country, a position we should constantly strive to encourage, support and maintain. The UO Bookstore has contributed in many ways to the success of the UOAA. My role as a board member is one way for me to give back and support the mission of the UO Bookstore. Thank you for your consideration. Jim Terborg I have been a customer of the University of Oregon Bookstore since 1 980 and a member of the Board of Directors since 2003. The mission of the Bookstore is to provide course materials at the best possible prices and to provide other products and services that make attending and working at the University of Oregon both convenient and enjoyable. The Bookstore strives for outstanding customer satisfaction by being efficient, responsive, and a meaningful place to work. I am committed to helping the student run bookstore keep textbook prices as low as possible while still delivering legendary customer service. Capable and empowered bookstore employees can accomplish this through the efficient use of technology. I have enjoyed my past 2 years on the Board and I look forward to continued service with the aim of helping the Bookstore implement its mission.
