Governor issues strategy to fight global warming GRANTS PASS — Gov. Ted Ku longoski wants Oregon to get tough on global warming, arguing that promoting renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions will be good for the local economy. The governor released a strate gy based on a report by a panel of experts and interest groups that recognizes global warming as a threat to Oregon’s economy due to far-reaching climatic changes, such as reduced snowpacks re sulting in less water for hydroelec tric production. It promotes steps that are in line with efforts being undertaken by the governors of Washington and California. The advisory panel suggested getting emissions of carbon diox ide and other greenhouse gases un der control by 2010, posting a 10 percent reduction by 2020 and a 75 percent reduction by 2050. The governor will appoint a task force to develop stricter emissions standards for vehicles, and a work ing group to develop a schedule for utilities and other large pro ducers of carbon dioxide to reduce emissions. — The Associated Press * ¥ Facingthe RIGHT Lauren Wimer ) Senior photographer College Republicans member Thomas Albright listens to ASUO Executive candidate Ashley Rees speak at a meeting Tuesday.
