Oregon freshman infielder Jen May was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Player of the Week on Wednesday. The honor is a first for the Oregon program. Denver midfielder Stephanie Greenlees earned the other co-player of the week honor. May, a Davidsonville, Md., native, scored a combined seven goals last week in a 16-6 victory against David son and a 21-8 loss to No. 3 North Carolina. The 18-year-old scored five goals against Davidson, four coming in the first 13 minutes of play. She also led the team with seven draw controls and six ground balls, along with two assists. In Friday’s loss to the Tar Heels, May scored two goals and added two ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. At South River High School in Maryland, May was a first-team all county pick by The Washington Post. She lettered four times in lacrosse and earned All-American honors during her junior season. At 5-foot-5, May also lettered in track, where she was a state champion in the pole vault. The Ducks (3-9 overall) continue action when they travel north to Portland to play the Portland Club team in an exhibition game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mary Rieke Elementary School. She still looked very strong in the last inning as she struck out the side in order. “The (last) inning has been our Achilles’ heel this season, so I was a little more focused this time,” Mc Gowan said. “Especially since it was against Oregon, our biggest rival.” The victory gave last week’s Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week her 22nd victory of the season, the most in the conference. Her counterpart, Harris, was no slouch either Wednesday. The Eu gene native retired the first 10 Oregon State batters and gave up only three hits, but unfortunately for the Ducks, two of them were home runs. “I take responsibility for those two home runs," Harris said. “I eliminate those two mistake pitch es, and we win the ball game ... You live and learn and unfortunately I learned the hard way today. “But at the same time, one hit, we can’t rely on one hit.” The only Oregon offensive output came in the top of the third inning when junior shortstop Breanne Sabol drew a walk from McGowan, and freshman Lovena Chaput sliced a double into the left-center field gap to score Sabol from first base. It was the only hit the Ducks could muster against McGowan. The Ducks still have two more chances at the Beavers this season. They’ll host a two-game series at Howe Field on April 23 and 24. “It’s really a tough loss,” Harris said. “It’s always hard to lose to your arch rivals 2-1. “But we’ll see them at home.” claytonjones@ daily emerald, com
