Journalism: Portland program might involve other schools Continued from page 1 Journalism professor Jim Van Leuven is helping shape the project. The University has “pretty much the only full-blown journalism and communications programs in the state,” Van Leuven said. “(Portland) is where the market is if we want to fulfill our mandate to the state.” Van Leuven envisions a coopera tive undergraduate internship and class program for Portland, where he hopes to offer students the op portunity to intern with a media company in the morning and take classes in the afternoon. If students enter the program toward the end of their college career, they can move right into a job, he said. “If you’re doing a paid internship at a business, you’re already trained in that business,” Van Leuven said. “We’re lining up very strong part time and adjunct faculty... (profes sionals who) want the opportunity to get back to teaching on the side,” Van Leuven said. In addition, the program would include at least one Eugene-based full-time faculty member, Van Leu ven said. Fundraising for the Portland pro gram is not yet complete. “We’re seeking additional endow ment dollars, which would be more structural,” Gleason said. The $6.5 million gift to the jour nalism school is the largest in that school’s history. “The fact that a friend of this pro gram believes that we were a good place to invest $6.5 million was a great validation of what we’ve been doing at this school and our vision,” I he graduate pro gram will hopefully combine public rela tions, advertising and media manage ment programs with MORE ONLINE^ For more on the $15 million gift to the University, visit www.dailyemerald.com. \jicdoUii r>dlu. The other $2 million not dedicated to the Portland project will go primarily toward endowments for grad MBA courses and also target profes sionals who have been in the field for three to five years, “people who’re al ready successful and looking at man agerial positions,” Van Leuven said. “We’re hoping that corporations and agencies will pay their employ ees’ tuition,” he added. Gleason said he hopes to cooper ate with other institutions in Port land to give journalism students the best education possible. “We’re very interested in having conversations with other universi ties in Portland,” Gleason said. “This isn’t a football game; we want to be collaborative in these efforts.” Some qualified professionals are already applying for teaching jobs. frflSli... uate and undergraduate students. “It’s extremely important to us to be able to provide scholarships to help offset the cost of a journalism education,” Gleason said. Senior journalism major Jason Nowlin said he can see the benefits of the program and thinks establish ing relationships with firms in Port land is important. “I’d be excited to have an intern ship anywhere,” Nowlin said. Nowlin said he considered the advertising program at Portland State, but was interested in the Uni versity because of its reputation and tradition. adamcheny@da.ily emerald, com 019324. lovrts mm Restaurant and Lounge Authentic Chinese Cuisine Fresh, Quality Ingredients 947 Franklin Blvd. (near UO) • 343-4480 Individual, Family Style, Banquets to 100, Take Out Tues.-Thurs. 11-10:30, Fri. 11-11 Sat. 12-11, Sun. 11:30-10 ie 3flgr Premier Travel • Virfurc Specials! • Mexico C its - $199.00*' Cabo - $328.00* Honolulu - $339.00* Amsterdam - $405.00* V:i\iv jinU Uv> iwit incluJcil. n^tvio'iis appK Sul'ic. t r -1 lijiirc ,M:hnai iv.ni.v , i-urail Passes issued On-Site!!! r.-muil: tares a Iiin 2tra\el.com 1011 Harlow ,747-0909 _ i Student Travel Experts The (fertility Center OREGON Women of the Philippines, Pacific Islands and of Asian Descent The Fertility Center of Oregon seeks women of specific ancestry to assist two local infertile couples in having families.
