IN BRIEF Ducks' losing streak extended to 14 matches Oregon found Los Angeles to be unwelcoming as it surrendered a pair of three-game victories to No. 6 USC and No. 17 UCLA last weekend. The Ducks (9-18 overall, 1-16 Pacific-10 Conference) have been swept by their last seven op ponents. On Saturday, the Bruins (17-9, 10-6) landed 63 digs and had a .387 hitting percentage to sweep Oregon, 30-16, 30-22, 30-27. Oregon started off rusty, hitting .081 with 10 kills and seven errors in the first game. Its attack landed 35 kills and committed only six er rors in the next two games. Sophomore Sarah Mason led all hitters with a match-high 16 kills and landed Oregon’s only service ace. Middle blocker Kristen Bitter tallied a career-best 12 kills and outside hitter Kelly Russell added 10. Bitter, a sophomore, hit .409 for the match. UCLA senior Brittany Ringel and sophomore Nana Meriwether each recorded 12 kills. The Bruins had five players hit at .400 or better. Libero Chrissie Zartman’s place ment on the floor put her in posi tion for 23 digs. USC (18-4, 13-3) blasted through the Ducks on Friday, 30-23, 30-23, 30-18, with the help of Bibiana Candelas’ match-high 13 kills and four block assists. ADAMS DAILY EMERALD FREELANCE REPORTER On Saturday, the Oregon wrestling team competed at the SOC Best of the West Tournament in Medford and continued its winning ways as three Ducks finished first in their respective weight divisions. The usual suspects of senior Scott Barker, Shane Webster and Joey Bracamonte took home titles for the 197, 174 and 165-pound weight classes, respectively. Webster’s first place finish was a welcoming result for the junior from Sams Valley, who settled for second-place at last year’s Best of the West Tournament. Barker (8-0) and Bracamonte (7-0) remain undefeated this season heading into this week’s Pacific 10 Conference opener with UC Davis at McArthur Court on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Oregon head coach Chuck Kear ney has enjoyed his team’s success ful start and marveled at its per formance last Saturday. “I was really pleased with our consistency,” Kearney said. “Over all, it was a very solid weekend.” As for the rest of Oregon’s wrestlers, junior Chet McBee and sophomore Cyle Hartzell finished in second place as finalists for the 184 and 157-pound weight classes, respectively. This was the first tour nament Hartzell has wrestled in all season. His fellow sophomore teammate Joey Lucas finished in third place in the 125-pound weight division. Kearney enjoyed seeing his younger wrestlers compete productively. “Our young guys showed a lot of promise,” Kearney said. “It was nice to see our whole team compete at a high level.” More than 5,000 fans came out to see the second-annual Best of the West Tournament. Aside from Oregon, schools that competed in cluded Southern Oregon, Oregon State, Oregon Tech, San Francisco State, Pacific University (Forest Grove), UC Davis, Menlo College, Portland State and Lassen Community College.
