The senior out of Scappoose commands an aerial offense that would scare any pass defense. The Beavers’ passing offense is second in the Pacif ic-10 Conference and seventh in the nation, av eraging 298.0 yards per game. Oregon State will not reach its 2003 school record of 4,265 passing yards this season, but with a projected total of 3,278 yards, it is on pace to surpass the 3,152 yards in 1987, which is the greatest amount accumulated in an 11-game schedule. Anderson is first in the conference in passing yards per game (290.6) and total offense (274.1). He is one of only six quarterbacks in Pac-10 history to pass for more than 10,000 yards, and the only one for Oregon State. Anderson is one of only two Pac-10 quarterbacks to ever throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season, which he did last year with 4,058. He has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 27 of the last 28 contests, includ ing a streak of 22 consecutive games, which ended on Oct. 2 against California. Anderson’s No. 1 connection is junior wide receiver Mike Hass, who also sits atop the league in two of his position’s respective categories with 112.0 receiving yards and 7.2 receptions per game. Hass is ranked nation ally in the top 10 in each of those areas. His ca reer average of 18.4 yards per reception is sec ond in the nation among active receivers. The former walk-on has 1,120 receiving yards, which equals his total from last season. He is attempting to break James Newson’s single-season receiving yards record of 1,306 yards. The Portland native set a new Pac-10 record, collecting 293 yards through the air against Boise State on Sept. 10. — Stephen Miller Cornerback Aaron Gipson The Oregon secondary has made great strides since 2002 Two years ago, the Ducks were 115th out of 117 teams in pass defense in the nation. During that season, they gave up a conference-record 536 passing yards to Arizona State’s Andrew Walter in the Ducks’ 45-42 loss. In 2003, the Ducks finished 105th in nation in pass de fense. In 2004 however, the much maligned secondary has moved up to 48th in the na tion in passing defense and currently ranks fourth in the Pacific-10 Conference, giving up just 201.7 yards per game. Much of the transformation can be attributed to the maturation of junior corner Aaron Gipson. Gipson has turned himself into one of the top corners in the conference. He is second in the Ore gon secondary in tackles with 39 and also has one forced fumble. He also leads the team and is tied for second in the conference in interceptions with four. Gipson will be questionable for the game due to a sprained ankle last week. Another contributor in the has been cornerback Jackie Bates. Starting as a true freshman, much like Gipson did in 2002, Bates has recorded 29 tackles and snagged the first interception of his career against Arizona earlier this season. Junior Justin Phinisee is ninth on the team in tackles with 38 in nine games this season. Sophomore free safety J.D. Nelson has filled in for the departed Keith Lewis by reg istering 61 tackles, good for second on the team.
