is taking over. That is what you want
and expect from a quarterback in this
offense. The last couple of weeks he
has played very well.”
Dorrell said his team’s No. 1 re
ceiver, All-American candidate Craig
Bragg, is expected to be back on the
field after dislocating his left shoulder
against Washington on Sept. 18, but
he will come off the bench. Bragg
needs just 11 receptions and 442 re
ceiving yards to surpass Danny
Farmer as the school’s all-time leader
in both categories.
“He will not start the game, but he
will get some playing time and we
will ease him back into the fold,”
Dorrell said.
In addition, tailback Maurice Drew
ranks second in the Pac-10 and 10th in
the nation in rushing (122.2 yards per
game) to help UCLA possess one of
the nation’s most prolific offenses. An
average of 435 yards per game ranks
the offense No. 22 in the country.
The Bruins’ offense will be tested
against a strong Arizona State de
fense that is rated 28th in the nation
in scoring defense, allowing just 18.2
points per game. The only blemish
for the Sun Devils’ defense was last
week’s demoralizing 45-7 loss to co
defending national champion USC.
“We got beat in all phases, and it
was not how we wanted to go
down,” Arizona State head coach
Dirk Koetter said. “We didn’t rise to
the occasion.”
Koetter said he will be looking to
his senior leadership to help the Sun
Devils bounce back into the win
ning column.
“We will tap into all of our lead
ers,” Koetter said. “What happened
was we were riding high and every
body was on the bandwagon, and
now everyone will jump off just as
fast. That is the nature of the beast.
“I told the team: Nobody was on
our bandwagon to start the season,
nobody thought we were going to be
where we are, so we just have to pick
ourselves up and ... get back to doing
the things that put us at 5-0 in the
first place,” he said.
One of the seniors being counted
on is quarterback Andrew Walter.
Walter became Arizona State’s all
time passing leader after passing for
181 yards last week. His career total
of 8,897 yards passed current NFL
and Denver Broncos’ quarterback
Jake Plummer, who compiled 8,827
yards during his collegiate career.
Walter has several offensive
weapons at his disposal, which in
clude freshman tight end Zach Miller.
Miller, who was tabbed the No. 1 tight
end prep prospect in the nation last
year, caught eight passes for a career
high 102 receiving yards last week
against USC. For the season, he has
turned in 22 catches for 253 yards and
has scored three touchdowns.
“As poorly as we played (last) Sat
urday, there were only a few bright
spots, and the guy that played best
overall was Zach,” Koetter said. “He
made two big mistakes in that game
that cost us two sacks. But as far as
his competitive edge and raising his
level in both catching the ball and
blocking for a true freshman, I was
really impressed with Zach.”
Despite being dominated last
week, Koetter said his team’s season
is not at all lost as they still have the
Pac-lO’s second best record just be
hind USC and ahead of California.
“We are still a good football team.
Our fans need to come out and get
behind our guys,” Koetter said. “We
still have a lot of good things we can
do this year. ”
