He started four games in 2003 and played in 11 as a redshirt freshman, but was injured for last year’s matchup against Oregon. The 6-foot-4 sophomore from Los Gatos, Calif., has started all six contests this year. Edwards has completed 112 passes for 1,390 yards and eight touchdowns on the season. He is ranked third in the league in total offense with 238.5 yards per game. His 122.58 pass ef ficiency rating is sixth-best in the conference. Last week, Edwards’ primary target against Washington State was wide receiver Evan Moore. The sophomore receiver reeled in two tosses for 87 yards, including a 67-yard touch down grab — Stanford’s only score through the air. Edwards also provided a scare for his teammates and coach when he collided with Cougar’s linebacker Will Derting. “The idea of self-preservation I don't think ever crosses his mind,” Stanford head coach Buddy Teevens said. “We talked to him, he did slide a cou ple of times earlier, but in that situation he just took the hit full on. We would like to have him avoid those if he can." This season, Edwards has only thrown five intercep tions in 200 attempts. His first pick did not come until the third game of the season against top-ranked Southern California. He threw for a career-high 297 yards in a 37-10 victory over Brigham Young. In 2003, Edwards completed 77 of 170 pass attempts for a total of 750 yards and four touchdowns. — Stephen Miller Quarterback Kellen Clemens Kellen Clemens knows about pressure. The junior from Burns, Ore., has taken command of a team that was expected to contend for the upper crust of the Pacific-10 Conference this year. However, a 1-3 start subjected Clemens to a flurry of criticism. "I think he's excitable, there's no question, Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti said. "If you watch him play, he's feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders sometimes. It’s hard for a quarterback to develop a lot of confidence when people are be ing turned loose in his face and on his backside." Two weeks ago, Clemens answered his critics by executing one of the single-best games for an Oregon individual in school history. Clemens torched the Cougars for 436 yards passing, while completing 36 for 55 passes and three touchdowns. He added 36 yards rushing and three more touchdowns to give him six for the day. His six touchdowns equaled an Oregon single-game record held by Joey Harrington vs. Arizona State in 2000 and Arizona in 2001 and Danny O’Neil vs. Stanford in 1994. He fell one shy of the Pac-10 record in a regulation game, held by Arizona State’s Mike Pagel vs. Stanford in 1981.
