IN BRIEF Yankees take 2-0 lead in ALCS, beat Red Sox 3-1 While the raucous crowd at Yan kee Stadium taunted Pedro Mar tinez with booming chants of “Who’s your daddy?” Jon Lieber shut down the highest-scoring of fense in the major leagues. A No. 5 starter pitching against a three-time Cy Young Award winner, Lieber took a shutout into the eighth inning. John Olerud backed him with a two-run homer in the sixth off the tiring Martinez, and the Yankees beat the Red Sox 3-1 Wednesday night for a 2-0 lead in their American League Champi onship Series rematch. After Orlando Cabrera singled leading off the third inning for Boston’s first hit, Lieber retired 13 straight batters before David Ortiz singled in the seventh. Lieber needed just 45 pitches to get through five innings — Martinez threw 46 in just the first two innings. After TYot Nixon singled leading off the eighth, Tom Gordon came in and allowed Jason Varitek’s double and Cabrera’s RBI grounder. After a day off, the series re sumes Saturday at Fenway Park, with Kevin Brown pitching for the Yankees against Bronson Arroyo. Boston headed home unsure of the status of ace Curt Schilling, whose ailing right ankle might prevent him from starting Game 5 if it’s needed. Martinez nicked Alex Rodriguez on the hand with the count 2-2, and Gary Sheffield singled to center on the next pitch, with Jeter scoring eas ily ahead of Damon’s weak throw. That was all the Yankees got then, with Martinez recovering to throw called third strikes past Hideki Mat sui and Bemie Williams before retir ing Jorge Posada on a grounder. Martinez was still throwing 95 mph pitches in the fifth inning, but he tired in the sixth, when he walked Posada with one out. Soccer: Lainez leads conference in saves Continued from page 13 Oregon is eighth in shots (131), but ranks last in points (27), goals (10), goals per game (0.83), assists (7) and assists per game (0.58). In relation, Oregon junior goal keeper Domenique Lainez leads the Pac-10 in saves with 61. She is on pace to break last year’s mark of 90, which ranked second in the Pac-10 and sixth all-time on the Ducks’ sin gle-season list. “We are going to try and combine around defenses, and to not play as much one on one,” Steffen said. “We are going to try and use our wide players more and stay wide. ” Some of the blame for the offensive woes has to fall on the rash of injuries the Ducks suffered in the spring. Red shirt junior Nicole Garbin’s status re mains doubtful for the rest of the sea son after a spring knee injury sidelined the Ducks’ most potent offensive weapon. Last year, Garbin broke season records for assists (8) and points (22), tied the shots record (70), and also ranked in the top five all-time for Oregon in goals (7, tie for fifth). In her career, she ranks first in assists (13), second in game-winning goals (6) and third in goals (12), points (37) and shots (112). “(Losing Nicole Garbin) was a huge factor,” Steffen said. “She has been one of the best players in the program. But our players have to raise their level. ” This season, a quartet of Ducks is tied for the team lead in goals. Fresh man Kami Kapaku, junior Mele French, senior Christine Mintz and junior Caitlin Gamble each have two goals for the Ducks. French leads the team in points (5) and is third in shots (16) and shots on goal (9). The strength of conference Five Pac-10 teams are ranked among Soccer America’s top 25 this week, including four teams in the top 15. UCLA moved into the No. 6 spot while Washington dropped three spots to No.7, after its loss to No. 24 Arizona. No. 14 California and No. 10 Stanford will face off with the Ari zona schools over the weekend. Freshman production In addition to Kapaku leading the team in shots on goal (14) and rank ing second in shots (22), a number of the other freshmen have been pro ducing this season. Midfielder Jen Cameron ranks fifth in shots on goal (5) and sixth in shots (8). Midfielder Dylann Tharp and midfielder/de fender Emily Danner have started 11 and seven games, respectively. Despite being “the old man” on a team more likely to break out in 2005 than 2004, Andrus smiled and said how much fun he was having this season. “I really enjoy the young guys,” he said. “I used to think freshmen were necessary nuisances, but I re ally like these guys.” Saturday will mark the first real test for Andrus and his youthful counter parts. Andrus, whose win at the 4K Stanford Invitational led the Ducks to victory, and company will run their first 8K meet of the season at Terre Haute, Ind., home of the LaVern Gib son Championship course, also site of the NCAA meet in late November. The field will include eight top-10 teams and 37 of the 47 teams receiving votes in the national poll. For Andrus, the NCAA meet in No vember will be his last collegiate ath letic experience. The post-baccalau reate student graduated with a 3.98 GPA in business finance last spring and finished his track eligibility in June.
