So far, the year has been a disappointment for the junior wide receiver, who has been slowed by a nagging turf toe injury. Looking to replace Sarnie Parker as Oregon’s top receiver, Williams has caught just 15 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown in four games. Williams’ sub-par season has hindered the progress of the Ducks’ offense. The lack of a big-play receiver has all but eliminated the deep passing game and led to problems in the red zone. Running back Terrence Whitehead, who has been one of Oregon’s few play-mak ers, said the offense needs Williams to be involved in or der to succeed. “We need more big plays,” Whitehead said. “I believe we need to get the ball in number six’s hands more. I don’t think anyone can cover him. People might say that I’m being cocky about him, but I don’t believe anyone can cover him.” The De La Salle High School product caught 51 balls for 935 yards and eight touchdowns last sea son. If Williams continues to struggle, Redshirt fresh man Garren Strong, seniors Keith Allen and Marcus Maxwell and true freshman Cameron Colvin need to find a way to make plays. After Williams’ 15 receptions, the three highest totals are held by Whitehead (14), fullback Dante Rosario (14) and tight end Tim Day (8). In comparison, Washington State’s biggest receiving threat, Jason Hill, has 15 receptions for 419 yards and six touchdowns. — Jon Roetman Linebacker WiH Derting Washington State redshirt junior linebacker Will Derting makes plays. So many, in fact, the preseason All-American is routinely the focus of opposing offenses. Derting recorded 65 solo tackles and assisted on another 21, giving him a combined 86 for the 2003 season. He also recorded 12 tackles for a combined loss of 63 yards and notched 7.5 sacks as well. “Will Derting is special,” Washington State head coach Bill Doha said. “He just finds the football.” Derting is also known for turning in impressive indi vidual performances. Last year against Oregon State, Dert ing recorded eight tackles, three sacks and a forced fum ble, which earned him Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week. He earned another Defensive Player of the Week when he collected 12 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble against Norte Dame. So far in 2004, Derting has recorded 30 total tack les in four games. He is averaging 7.5 tackles per game, which ranks him 12th in the Pacific-10 Con ference. “Derting continues to amaze me,” Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti said. “He makes plays. He makes them all over the field, and they are difference making plays. ” Derting’s presence on the field makes the rest of his linebacking core better. Veteran Pat Bennett and play maker Scott Davis could easily improve their indi vidual statistics. Davis is close to surpassing his 2003 total in tackles in just his first four games of 2004. “He is a Sunday player,” Doba said of Derting. “He has a great mental attitude, and he is a competitor. He competes everywhere.” — Brian Smith 2004 OREGON SCHEDULE September 11 Indiana, L, 24-30 18 @ Oklahoma, L, 7-31 ■ 25 Idaho, W, 48-10 October 2 Arizona State, L, 13-28 9 @ Washington State, 2 p.m. 16 Arizona, 12:30 p.m. 23 @ Stanford, 2 p.m. 30 Washington, 12:30 p.m. November 6 @ California, 12:30 p.m. 13 UCLA, 12:30 p.m. 20 @ Oregon State, 4 p.m. STATISTICAL LEADERS 2004 Oregon statistical leaders T.
