The group has set up a Web site and has run a full-page ad in The Register-Guard with the words "Run Jim Run" in large letters across the top to show its support of the city's current mayor. The ad also included a letter to the citizens of Eugene from former Eugene mayor Jeff Miller en couraging people to fill out reply cards or to go to the group's Web site to show support for Torrey. Kitty Piercy won the primary may oral election in May with more than 50 percent of the vote, so only her name will appear on the ballot in November's general election. Torrey said he appreciates the support "I will certainly consider (running), but at this point I wouldn't say it's very likely," he said. "I understand why they're doing this, but I don't want them to get their hopes up." According to the group's Web site, www.runjimrun.org, the citizens be hind this effort include "a past mayor, educators, doctors, housewives, mothers, sons, daughters, small busi ness owners and others ... who live, work and raise families in Eugene." "We believe at this critical time in our city's future, we cannot afford to replace the steady and experienced leadership of the current Mayor Tor rey with a liberal majority experimen tation and special-interest agenda led by Kitty Piercy," the Web site stated. Miller's letter in The Register- Guard ad said Eugene is at a crossroads and that the city needs Torrey's leadership. Miller wrote that Torrey will create more local jobs and continue to im prove the economy, improve parks and school resources, lead the city in hos pital relocation and local health care, and solve transportation challenges. "His experience and leadership . would be sorely missed and lacking as we consider the direction the govern ment and city may soon take," the Web site said. The effort isn't an anti-Kitty Piercy campaign, Torrey said, but represents a concern about the liberal leanings of the incoming City Council. As current mayor, Torrey said he strikes a balance between environmen tal and business concerns. He added that some people are concerned that once the liberal minority on the Coun cil becomes a majority, it won't be recep tive to new business or compromise "Kitty Piercy wants to be a mayor for all of Eugene," Torrey said. "But I'm not sure she can be a mayor for all of Eugene with the makeup of the council." omiedrawhorn@dailyemerald.com FAIR TRADE means buying GOOD5 while providing a FAIR WAGE for the producers, SUPPORTING & ENHANCING their lifestyles & SHARING between CULTURES, in essence BRINGING me WORLD CLOSER TOGETHER.
