(Monday ■ Friday) Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation EMPTY CAMPUS DAY August 4th To show the UO that they must deal fairly with all of their employees, the GTFF is asking that you avoid coming on to campus on August 4th. This is the day before mediation begins and we will show the UO that the GTFF is strong and supported by the campus community CAMPUS! GTFs and sympathetic faculty will be holding their classes off campus, ask your instructor for more information. After 9 months of bargaining the University and the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation have not been able to reach an agreement on a new contract. The main sticking points are • The University refuses to bargain wages, and has insisted that GTFs get no raises for the length of the new contract. ^ • The University has repeatedly tried to change the O contract to allow the UO to hire Grad students and others ^ at cheap hourly wages, undermining the union and 3 depriving those workers of collective bargaining rights. • The University has offered almost no improvement in our contract language, and only a small temporary decrease in fees. We remain committed to bargaining a fair contract for GTFs, and ask for the university i community’s support to achieve this. More info and updates at www.gtff.net. Teachers Researchers CORRECTION The Emerald erroneously reported in the July 29 article "Museum opening postponed until ‘05" that a portion of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will open in October for a special traveling exhibition of work by Andy Warhol. In fact, the museum will not reopen to the public until January 2005, and will feature the Warhol exhibi tion as the inaugural installation of its 4,000-square-foot Changing Exhibitions Gallery at that time. The Emerald regrets the error. NEWS BRIEF Continuing Education Program receives grant The University's Continuing Edu cation Program recently received a $100,000 grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, an organization that focuses on education and health care and works with universi ties to offer stimulating learning in retirement programs. The grant will underwrite new courses at existing Continuing Edu cation program sites and fund ex pansion of programs currently avail able only in the Eugene-Springfield area and Central Oregon to other Oregon communities. “This award recognizes the strength and potential of our programs and confirms the University's commit ment to serve the growing population of retired and semi-retired men and women in Oregon," Continuing Edu cation Director Curt Lind said. — Trains Willse Erik R. Bishoff Online & Photo Editor Creswell resident James House is bringing a lawsuit against the University after an unlawful-trespass notice banned him from campus and he was allegedly prevented from filing an appeal. LAWSUIT continued from page 1 Lavalife, and they were just friends. House said they pursued friendship for six months before Hastie retreated from the friendship without breaking off all contact, House said. In January, House began to attend an aerobics class at the University Stu dent Recreation Center which hap pened to be taught by Hastie, House said. She said he contacted her in writ ing before signing up for the class and asked her if it would be a problem if he were there, he said. He received no response, he said. Hastie told DPS that House had been in her class the previous year and had continued to contact her even after she told him not to. Hastie told DPS that House joined the rec center to pursue contact with her, House said. "They tried to accuse me of harass ing and stalking her," said House, who denies all of Hastie's allegations. House said Hastie claims they met when he took a class from her at the rec center during the 2003-04 school year and she never met him on Laval ife. House said he never signed up for any classes before January of this year. "She's basically trying to make it look like I'm a student who tried to pursue a personal relation ship," House said. "She's a patho logical liar." The rec center wouldn't release House's records showing he had or hadn't taken classes before January. The University Office of the Registrar Office said it didn't have that infor mation because it dealt solely with the rec center. "They tried to accuse me of harassing and stalking her." — James House Filed lawsuit against University House said he was not allowed to give a statement before the trespass notice was issued and that Hicks re lied solely on Hastie's story. House said Hastie claims he called her re peatedly at work, after she had asked him not to, and that he was at the rec center solely to pursue a relationship. Those claims are false, he said. Phone calls and e-mails to Hastie were not returned. House said the case is likely to go to court around the end of the year but he hopes it will not be taken that far and that the University will settle. "It's going to be difficult," said House. "They've caused me a lot of distress." Further information on the case and its progress can be found at House's Web site www.oregonreform.com. benbrown@dailyemerald.com
