Go Ducks! twws.voscomputers.com Emeralds first baseman Orlando Diaz lets a pitch go by in Sunday's 7-5 loss to Everett at Civic Stadium. Diaz is batting .240 this season. Jared Paben Editor in Chief EMERALDS continued from page 5 "It's still early and we got a lot more games left to play," said Morton, who is batting .272 with nine home runs this season through Sunday. "It's about getting base run ners on and scoring them and getting key base hits." Eugene starting pitcher Vern Sterry (2-2) took the loss after giving up six earned runs off five hits in 5 1/3 in nings. Sterry's ERA jumped more than one run from 2.12 to 3.34. "I felt good and my stuff was working," Sterry said. "I don't think (Everett's hitters) made any ad justments. I think they just put the ball out there and baseball is base ball. You get a hit, you give up a hit and that's how it works. Next time I face this team, I'm going to keep pitching the same." After Sunday's game, Howell said it is tough for any team to come back in the latter innings from a deficit when the opposition sends out their best pitchers. "In the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, you're going to face the best stuff," Howell said. "We battled and we kept coming back. That's all you can ask for. They got their five runs and they capitalized on that. We did n't capitalize when we had the chance and when you face their closer and setup guy, it's a little bit tougher." Tough times occurred last Friday when the Emeralds suffered their worst offensive output of the season in an 8-0 loss. Spokane used three pitchers, who allowed only two hits and struck out eight batters. Morton, who had one of the two hits, said figuring out the team's of fense is puzzling. The team is last in the league with a batting average of .228 through Sunday. "We got so many good hitters in this lineup and we got so much po tential to drive in a lot more runs," Morton said. "Unfortunately, it seems like all of our hitters click on one night. If we get a lot more guys work ing together, especially on nights when we're not all hitting the ball, we'll probably be more consistent."Eugene continues its se ries against Everett tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Civic Stadium. The six-game series ends Friday. NOTES The San Diego Padres, Eugene's major league affiliate, signed non drafted free agent pitcher Joel Santo and outfielder Chris Kolkhorst. Both were assigned to Eugene. Santo, who was 8-7 with a 4.54 ERA for Idaho Falls of the Pioneer League last year, will make his debut Wednesday. Kolkhorst batted .371 for 2003 na tional champion Rice University. ... Eugene outfielder Craig Johnson was assigned to the Padres' Arizona Rook ie League team in Peoria, Ariz. last week.... The Padres will hold an open tryout camp for undrafted players be tween the ages of 16 and 25 on Satur day, July 24 at 10 a.m. The camp is free and will be held at Civic Stadium. alextam@dailyemerald.com
