Thank you, Sir. May I have another? Review by Marissa Jones After the great dinner I had the night before, I seriously considered going back to Jake’s Place the following morning to experience their breakfast food. In the same way that you’re tempted to return to Baskin Robbins every day for a month to try all 31 flavors, so I felt about Jake’s Place. Here we’re talking about items such as top sirloin, pan-fried oysters and homemade onion rings. Hidden among a residential neighborhood, Jake’s Place can be found at 605 West 19th (431-0513). Located next to a convenience store, I was not sure what to expect, but I soon found that the exterior of the building didn’t do justice to the quality food and decor I found inside. Once we were seated and had a chance to start looking over the menu, my friend Zach and I were both in awe of the choices of pasta, salad, steak, fish and sandwiches appearing on the menu. As the waitress listed the specials, I stopped her after the first one and immediately ordered the salmon covered with sun-dried tomatoes, chives, mushrooms and spices, and served with rice and vegetables. Zach had the strength to hold out and listen for the second special. He chose the tenderloin, served with potatoes and vegetables. Our meals fell into the price range of the other specials of the house, ranging from $12.50 to $16.50. Our curiosity got the best of us so we opted to try the teriyaki chicken wings as an appetizer before our entrees arrived. Our meal came served with “grandma’s rolls,” which looked good enough to knock me off the Atkins diet in a heartbeat. Both of us enjoyed our entrees tremendously, but I have to admit, I may have made a mistake by not holding out for the tenderloin that, Zach commented, was juicy and cooked to perfection. I made up for my quick-entree order by outdoing Zach in the final round: dessert. I ordered a delicious homemade brownie topped with ice cream. The brownie was crunchy on the outside while still extremely gooey on the inside. Zach ordered a chocolate mousse, which he enjoyed, but it just didn’t beat the brownie. You should ask to see the whole dessert tray because the other options, such as tiramisu, looked just as delicious. While Jake’s Place is a little on the higher price end, it makes for a great date location or a special spot to take the parents when they visit. The atmosphere is quiet with live musicians providing background music on certain nights. If you’re watching your spending, at least stop by for the dessert and friendly service, but I warn you, once you glance at the breakfast menu you’ll have to return. Jake’s Place offers local charm and good, quality food. I highly recommend going for dinner, and don’t be embar rassed to return for breakfast the next day.
