Progressives should unite to beat Bush The editorial on April 6th titled "Nader's bid means new possibilities for country" leaves unanswered: what new possibilities? Instead of stepping down in the 2000 campaign, Nader stayed in the race This decision gready impacted the election. It is almost im possible to argue that his 97,000 votes in Florida didn't sway the results in Bush's favor. The conservatives under stood this reality very well, paying for Nader commercials in key states. The closeness of the 2000 COMMENTARY «»«“?« _ meant that the choice for Nader meant more than just simply voting symbolically for one's con science by stressing subtle differences in policy; it meant helping elect a Presi dent that is completely antithetical to this conscience. Under Bush, issues of the utmost importance to Nader sympathizers and progressive minded people have been trampled on. The ed itorial article stated that Ralph Nader is "... more an issue for debate than an ac tual presidential candidate". I com pletely agree. We can debate Nader all we want but if you want to change the direction of our country, instead of vot ing symbolically, please vote for an "ac tual presidential candidate." The only possibility that Ralph Nader brings is an old one and we saw that in the election of2000. This is the possibility of division among liberals leading to another four years of Bush. It is time for progressive-minded people to join to gether in the common cause of beating George Bush. If you want to see new possibilities for our country actually re alized, please support John Kerry for President. Kevin CurtinTs a political science major and co-chair of the College Democrats. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Adam and Mena will stop “sketchy scheduling fee” I am writing to offer my support to Adam and Mena for ASUO Execu tive. I decided to do so not long af ter dropping a class during the first week of spring term. This course, which didn't change my course load because 1 added another class at the same time, will cost me 15 percent of the cost of the course. This policy is a blatant attempt by the University to get even more money from students who are al ready paying too much tuition. Adam and Mena know this. They are the only ones who are working to stop this sketchy scheduling fee. To help preserve academic freedom, r vote for Adam and Mena. Hayley Harris junior journalism Strawn and Aguilar committed to change We need an ASUO Executive that is dedicated to creating changes right here on campus. I give my endorse ment to Ben Strawn and Diana Aguilar for ASUO Executive because they are committed to this principle. General apathy on campus for stu dent government has been driven by previous ASUO Executive administra tions that have focused too much on off-campus issues. It is time for a change! Ben and Diana will bring tan gible results to students by increasing the availability of campus resources, improving community relations with students and demanding not only af fordable but also quality education. Good intentions are not enough — the Executive must truly under stand and represent the interests of their fellow students. Ben and Diana will use their experience to do this for you. I urge you to vote for Ben and Diana. Mike Sherman junior political science, economics Strawn and Aguilar deserve students' votes I beseech all University students to make a wise choice and vote for Ben Strawn and Diana Aguilar in the ASUO general elections this Friday through Monday. Ben and Diana are two exceptional individuals with a strong vision and plan to create tangible change on the University campus. Issues such as housing stan dards, tuition, student fees, library, and rec center hours and increased community are central to the Ben and Diana campaign. Not only do Ben and Diana have brilliant ideas for the improvement of campus life, they have the drive, abili ty and support from administration and students to be successful in our endeavors. With enthusiasm, I urge you to vote for Ben and Diana in this general election.
