Various reports have the New York Yankees paying the free-agent slugger as much as $40 million over three years, but the sides are more likely to agree to a deal closer to three years for $33-$36 million, according to sources. In fact, if the Yankees were offering Sheffield $40 million, it would mean that Steinbrenner was bidding against himself. Sources told the Daily News that Atlanta not budged from their initial offer of three years, $30 mil lion, meaning there is no incentive for the Yankees to take the price up on their own. 'Ehe Yankees' initial offer was a flat three-year deal at $ 11 million per sea son, but they are now working with a contract for three years at $ 12 million per. Much of the money in that pro posal is deferred, however, meaning the average annual value still would be $11 million. Since The Boss is negotiating the Sheffield deal personally, an an nouncement could come at any mo ment. Sources say Steinbrenner be lieves Alanta is content to offer Sheffield arbitration — on the off chance he accepts and they can bring him back for one more season — which means the Yankees will have to forfeit a draft pick to Atlanta when "We don't have a deal. A deal is done when a deal is done. There are a lot of things that could happen and we re still talking with several teams. Gary is positive on the Yankees and positive on (Atlanta), and there are a few other teams that have expressed some interest, too." Rufus Williams Advisor to Gary Sheffield they sign the 35-year old outfielder, even if they wait until the Dec. 7 dead line for arbitration offers. Boston's blockbuster deal for Curt Schilling certainly made it more likely that Sheffield's signing would come sooner rather than later — The Boss never likes it when praise for Boston dominates the headlines — but he spent all of Saturday at the hospital with Billy Connors, the Yankees VP of player personnel. Connors is one of Steinbrenner's closest friends, and The Boss stayed with him after Connors suffered a massive heart attack and underwent quadruple-bypass surgery. Steinbrenner's concern over Con nors likely delayed a deal with Sheffield, and Sheffield's adviser, Ru fus Williams, said nothing is finalized. "We don't have a deal," Williams said. "A deal is done when a deal is done. There are a lot of things that could happen and we're still talking with several teams. Gary is positive on the Yankees and positive on (Atlanta), and there are a few other teams that have expressed some interest, too. There is no rush, because this is a big decision for Gary. It's not the first one in who gets the deal done, it's the first one with the best offer." Sheffield hit .330 with 39 homers and 132 RBI last season, and finished third in the NL MVP voting. He would give Steinbrenner the sort of star pow er that The Boss desires, and would be an upgrade over last year's right field by-committee that featured Karim Garcia, Juan Rivera and David Delluc ci after Raul Mondesi was traded.
