Beavers, Ducks square off in 107th edition of Civil War The Civil War takes on post-season implications when Oregon State comes to Eugene on Saturday By Mindi Rice Senior Sports Reporter The 107th Civil War is coming to Oregon and Oregon State, and the game has Pacific-10 Conference im plications. Ihe team that comes out of Autzen Stadium victorious Saturday can claim state superiority and a likely No. 3 finish in the Pacific-10 Confer ence. "It's going to be a big game this year," defensive end Devan Long said. "It decides what bowl we're going to. It's going to be exciting." The Ducks (7-4 overall, 4-3 Pac-10) secured their lOth-consecutive win ning season Saturday with a victory against UCLA. Oregon's trip to the Rose Bowl started on the right foot when line backer Jerry Matson intercepted a pass on the third play of the game. He re turned it 22 yards for a touchdown and the Ducks never lost the lead. Quarterback Kellen Clemens made the most of Saturday's game. For the first time this season, the starter did n't relinquish the field to senior Jason Fife until the victory was solidly wrapped up in the fourth quarter. Senior Sarnie Parker caught a 40 yard pass for the second score of the game, putting Oregon ahead, 14-0. It was all they needed to reach their eventual 31-13 victory. Saturday's game against Oregon State doubles as the Autzen farewell to 14 Oregon seniors, including Fife and Parker. "This senior class has gone to a bowl game every year, has had a win ning season every year, has been to the pinnacle of Oregon football," head coach Mike Bellotti said. "It's certainly been one of the cornerstones in the history of Oregon football. Some of these guys will go down as some of the best players ever to wear the uniform, so it's with a combina tion of a little bit of pleasure and a lit tle bit of sadness that 1 wish them goodbye." The seniors will see their home farewell during many players' favorite game of the season: Civil War. "I've been to just about every Civil War game since I was a young kid, so to be playing in one is a dream come true," senior fullback Matt Floberg said. "I think there's just a deeper re Tum to PREVIEW, page 19B Clemens, Anderson's paths intersect Saturday at Autzen Way back in July of 2000, Oregon quarterback Kellen Clemens told Bud Withers of The Seattle Times that he foresaw then-Scappoose High School star Derek Anderson choosing Wash ington State. By September of the same year, An derson proved that Clemens should stick to his day job: football. He made Clemens' prediction inaccurate by choosing Oregon State. Anderson's decision has put his and Clemens' path on a collision course, one that is going to come to a head Saturday at Autzen Stadium. When the two were seniors in high school, Clemens was named the fifth Hank Hager Behind the dish best quarterback in the nation by The Sporting News. Anderson was ranked three slots lower. lust a month earlier, the two had at tended the prestigious Elite 11 Quar terback Camp in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Twelve high schoolers attended the event, including current Purdue QB Kyle Orton, Florida's Ingle Martin and USC's Matt Leinart. Anderson and Clemens have been ranked with the best of the best for years now, and only recently has ei ther begun to blossom. Clemens showed the confidence and consistency Oregon coaches were expecting when he led the Ducks to a 21-17 comeback win over California.
