"Alicia is probably regarded as the most impressive pitcher in the state of Oregon," Arendsen said. "Our goal has always been to keep the best kids at home and this is a huge step in that direction.” Cook led Elmira with a .506 batting average and a 0.13 earned run average during her junior year in 2003. She was named the state's player of the year by The Register-Guard after throwing 264 strikeouts and 20 shutouts in the season. Cook's sister, Jennifer Cook, pitched for Oregon from 1996-1999. "(Alicia Cook) is probably the first player we've brought in that is a multi-position player," Arendsen said. "She can hit, she can play first base and she'll obviously pitch. She has incredible poise and unflap pable confidence." The Ducks finished one win away from the Women's College World Series in May, finishing third in the Pacific-10 Conference in Arendsen's first year. — Mindi Rice osu continued from page 5 Oregon State into a battle for the Holi day Bowl. That committee could select whichever team it likes, although Washington State may be its choice be cause of the Cougars' 36-30 win earli er this season. If the Beavers lose to the Ducks and Trojans and UCLA loses to USC on Sat urday, Oregon State and UCLA will tie Each will be destined for either the In sight Bowl or las Vegas Bowl. Finally, if Oregon State loses its last two games, UCLA defeats USC and California beats Stanford, then the Beavers would land in sixth and most likely the Sili con Valley Football Classic. Makes the last part of the season seem interesting, huh? Bleeding orange and black The parting shots between the Ducks and Beavers have already been started. No, Keith Lewis hasn't said any thing. Oregon head coach Mike Bel lotti has silenced the senior free safety from talking to the media for the rest of the season. This time, the words came from Corvallis. Oregon State linebacker Richard Seigler has been in the Civil War since joining the Beaver program in 1999 out of Chaparral High School in Las Vegas. He had a little fun with the game, giving everyone his feel ings on Tuesday. "We're expanding Reser Stadium and we are going to have some extra seats, so the gates for all the Duck fans to come on over to Beaver nation are open," he said. "We're adding seats, so if Duck fans want to make the transi tion to Beaver nation, our arms are wide open. That's all I'm going to say." Oregon State head coach Mike Ri ley will be in his first Civil War since rejoining Oregon State prior to the start of this season. In his two previ ous games on the sideline; he lost 48 30, in 1997, but came back with a 44 41 overtime win the next year. "I think that pretty much was a landmark game in that regard," Riley said in reference to the win propelling the Beaver program. "We played a very good Oregon team in a really good football game by both teams, and to win it under pressure of overtime was a big, big thing for sure." Winning mentality Ferreira has been patient as the sea son has progressed, choosing to focus on how Oregon has improved rather than dwell on its record. He wanted to reiterate, however, how important win ning is to him as a coach and former player. While Ferreira understands it will take time to win with such a young team in the Pac-10, he never enters a match looking for moral victories. "Winning is very, very important," Ferreira said. "I'm never going into a match for brownie points. I coach to win every single match. There's a lot of valuable lessons that you can leam from athletics, but first and foremost we're going to try and compete be cause you can't work on winning by (just) talking about winning." In his 10th season as a head coach, Ferreira has a record of 181-139, in cluding a 100-13 record in three sea sons at Cal State Bakersfield and a 48 43 record in three seasons at Idaho.
